Advent calendar day 13 Hot chocolate is a great warmer on a cold day. However, you can make your favourite beverage work for you in other ways as well. Invest in some good quality unsweetened cacao, add boiling water and a dash of milk or milk alternative, and stir in some ground spice: cinnamon, ginger, star anise, nutmeg. If you really must make it sweeter, use a spoonful of honey or maple syrup. The branded hot chocolate powders you find in the supermarket contain little good quality chocolate and a lot of sugar, so they are not going to give you’re the extra benefits. Cocoa powder for baking on the baking aisle of the supermarket generally has more cacao and less sugar than the one you find int the hot drinks aisle. Cacao contains polyphenols which have excellent antioxidant properties. Spices such as cinnamon and ginger are naturally warming. All in all, just what you need on a cold day.

Plum cake is a type of cake that traditionally contains dried fruits like raisins, currants, and prunes, and is often associated with Christmas and other festive occasions. Despite the name, most modern plum cakes do not contain fresh plums; the term "plum" historically referred to dried fruits in general. Key Features of Plum Cake: Dried Fruits: Ingredients like raisins, currants, sultanas, and sometimes candied fruits are soaked in alcohol (rum, brandy, or wine) or fruit juice for added flavor and richness. Spices: Commonly includes warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves to enhance its festive flavor profile. Richness: Made with butter or oil, sugar, and sometimes nuts like almonds or walnuts, making it a dense and moist cake. Alcohol-Infused: Many recipes include alcohol in the batter or during soaking to preserve the cake and deepen its flavor. Non-alcoholic versions use juices or syrups. Occasions: Popular around Christmas, weddings, and special celebrations. #foodbites #plumcake #foodtech #merrychristmas
