Insurance Update: MCA on 12th of August, 2024, notified Ind AS 117, the much awaited standard which describes the principles of Accounting for Insurance Contracts.   The effective date is period beginning on or after 1st April 2024 and basis my personal view, it applies to: Ø Insurance Companies: While standard is notified, one will have to wait for the update from the insurance regulators (IRDAI) with respect to effective date as it requires amendments in the current applicable IRDAI financial statement preparation regulations. Ø Group Reporting: Insurance Companies will have to prepare financial statements  under Ind AS 117 for group reporting purpose in cases where parent is covered under Ind AS regime. This is critical as Ind AS 104 has been substituted with Ind AS 117. One will have to see, how this will be complied with, effective from mid of the year. Ø As the standard applies to other then insurance companies also, one will have to assess the existing contracts which may fall under Ind AS 117 (assessment will be required for warranties / financial guarantee contracts etc). Especially, companies who have opted Ind AS 104 with respect to accounting of financial guarantees, will have to account the same under Ind AS 117. Exciting time ahead for the insurance sector as it goes through the biggest transformation journey in form of implementing Ind AS 117. Stay tuned for more information! #indas117 #insuranceupdate

In more recent times PII conditions have begun to ease across the entire insurance market for professional services firms, particularly in financial advice. New entrants have been a catalyst for new markets showing interest in advisers and existing providers being compelled to review their approach to pricing due to this increased competition. This has had a very positive impact so the conversation for advice businesses has now moved from "what can I get?" to “what am I getting?” - One particular area of focus for us has been excesses or retention structures. They aren’t all the same and can operate in a profoundly different way with devastating consequences for the wrong advisers. - Without the proper understanding of your PII program's excess structure, you could find yourself with an excess of over $1,000,000 in the event you need to make a claim.
