🌟The Unsung Heroes of Modern Medicine: Horseshoe Crabs 🌟 Every year, half a million horseshoe crabs are captured, and we drain their blue blood. 🦀🔵 Key Insight: This ancient marine creature’s blood contains a unique chemical that detects bacterial contamination with unmatched speed and precision, a groundbreaking discovery made by scientists Frederick Bang and Jack Levin in the 1960s. 🔬 The Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) Test: Now a vital tool in pharmaceutical safety, protecting everything from vaccines to IV fluids. Today, 500,000 horseshoe crabs are captured annually for their blood. Conservation and Medical Needs: - Despite concerns about the impact on horseshoe crab populations, conservation efforts aim to balance medical needs with ecological preservation by returning most crabs to the ocean after blood extraction. However, the blood loss decreases their likelihood of survival. 🌍 The Big Picture: These underappreciated arthropods, whose evolutionary lineage predates the dinosaurs, continue to save lives. Humanity owes much of its modern medical safety to these living fossils from the ocean floor. Red blood cells (RBCs), scientific name erythrocytes (from ancient Greek erythros 'red' and kytos 'hollow vessel', with -cyte translated as 'cell' in modern usage), also known as red cells,[1] erythroid cells, and rarely haematids, are the most common type of blood cell and the vertebrate's principal means of delivering oxygen (O2) to the body tissues—via blood flow through the circulatory system.[2] Erythrocytes take up oxygen in the lungs, or in fish the gills, and release it into tissues while squeezing through the body's capillaries. #conferencefora #RedBloodCells #BloodBiology #BloodCells #Hematopoiesis #Hemoglobin #HealthyBlood

https://lnkd.in/dvg6ZAjx Article title: Anthropometric measures of young Nigerians for ergonomic furniture design Author: José Mesquita-Guimarães* Journal: Journal of Biology and Medicine Journal ISSN: 2688-8408 Abstract: Background: Ergonomic furniture design which is based on the application of the anthropometric measurements of the intended users does not only reduce the risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders such as low back pain, but also improves work performance. Aim: The main aim of this study was to survey and describe Nigerian University students based on important anthropometric measures relevant to ergonomic classroom furniture design. Method: A total of five hundred and ninety (undergraduate and graduate) students where surveyed using the traditional methods of data capture. The measurement considered were the most important anthropometric features relevant to ergonomic furniture design. #Anthropometricmeasures #Furnituredesign #Musculoskeletaldisorder #Sexualdimorphism #Biochemistry #Biotechnology #Bioinformatics #Cardiology #CellBiology #Peertechz #PeertechzPublications #FoodAndNutrition #FreeRadicalResearch #InfectiousAndCommunicableDiseases #Genetics #Gerontology #Microbiology #Hepatology #Gastroenterology #Toxicology #MedicinalChemistry #Nanotechnology #Oncology #Pharmacology #PlantBiology #Pathology #Physiology #RadiationBiology #Nephrology #StemCellResearch #VascularBiology

This study, published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology (2014), is the Master’s dissertation of Priscila Pavan. I performed all statistical analyses. Initially, a descriptive analysis included socio-demographic characteristics, HAART use, HIV-related diseases, specific antiretroviral drugs, smoking, alcohol consumption, and immunological data. Full-mouth periodontal clinical measurements were averaged for each patient and then within each group, and presented as the mean of PD and CAL, and the percentage of sites with BOP and VSB. Continuous variables were compared using the Mann–Whitney test, and categorical variables were analyzed using Fisher’s exact test. To estimate the effect of co-variables on the outcome of undetectable subgingival HIV-1 viral load (SHVL), the multiple logistic method Generalized Estimation Equation (GEE) was employed. This model was used to account for the clustered nature of the probing depth data. For this analysis, only co-variables with p < 0.05 in the comparison between detectable and undetectable PHVL were included. The level of significance for all analyses was 5%. https://lnkd.in/dUn3ZDnT

A review on the phytopharmacological studies of the genus Polygala ( Journal of Ethnopharmacology ) The genus Polygala, part of the Polygalaceae family, includes over 600 species worldwide. This review aims to discuss the traditional uses, recent phytochemical and pharmacological advancements, and potential mechanism of action of Polygala species from 2013-2019. Data was collected from various scientific databases, revealing traditional uses for wounds, inflammation, cardiovascular, and central nervous system disorders. Species such as P. altomontana, P. caudata, and P. tenuifolia were studied and found to contain various compounds like triterpenes, terpenoids, flavonoids, and polysaccharides. Biological studies indicated anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antidepressant, and other properties.Polygala tenuifolia has been extensively used to enhance memory and cognitive function. However, some studies lacked complete methodologies and clear findings. More high-quality preclinical studies with pharmacokinetic considerations are needed to assess the traditional uses and potential biological applications of Polygala species. Overall, this review provides updated insights for further research on the biological activities and structure/activity relationships of Polygala species, with the goal of improving preparations and potential clinical applications.
