Nearly graduates of Sport Science and Coaching; I am nearly as excited as you will be for graduation on Weds. I'll be about in the courtyard (before and after the ceremony) to say well done, grab a photo or two, and get you to reflect on just how far you have come, by getting you to pen your responses to a couple of questions like those below!

Physical Education (PE) is more than just a subject; it’s a key to inspiring a lifelong love for movement. At FIS, we believe that each child is unique, which is why our approach goes beyond traditional PE. By offering a wide range of activities—from swimming to team-building games—students can discover their own passions without the pressure to specialise too early. Our aim is to cultivate joy in physical activity, encourage teamwork, and equip students with self-management skills that extend far beyond the classroom. We integrate movement throughout the day, during breaks and even in different kind of lessons, because we know that active children are healthier and happier. In today’s digital world, nurturing an active lifestyle is crucial. It’s not just about moving now; it’s about laying the foundation for a lifetime of well-being, confidence, and enjoyment. After all, even the greatest sports careers begin with a love for movement! 24 years ago, around this time of year, we wrapped up our final high school track meet at Benilde-St. Margaret's School . As students, none of us knew how much our lives would change in the coming months and years, but the love for sports has always connected us. Coach Will invited me to throw shot put before I even knew what it was. Adwin next to me is my good friend from Saint Lucia, whom I haven't seen since graduation. Angie from Jamaica, whom I continued to compete with at the University of St. Thomas , will always be my teammates. A thrower and 2 sprinters... The bonds kids make in sports can last a lifetime. As a parent, I've come to see how important team sports are for kids. They get to learn so many life skills. Maybe one of the most important is how to work with people who are different from them: from different backgrounds, different points of view, and from different cultures. I get to work every day helping kids get better at sports and helping the clubs they play for share valuable feedback on what the kids need to do to improve. If my kids' coach says they need to run faster or do plyometrics, then they know what to do, and I can also help them improve. As a parent, how do you respond to feedback about your kids? I know I personally still love coaches yelling at me to go faster or harder. As we get older, things in life change, but I will never forget my teammates and the memories we made together. New Blog Post: Introducing Students to New Lifetime Sports in a Mobile PE Class by Casey Page "We started piecing together the idea of a mobile PE class that would focus on lifetime sports. It would also feature superlong units to allow students time to actually practice and perfect their new skills, since the end goal was to have students playing lifetime sports for, you know, a lifetime. It was going to be a lot of work, but as teachers know, our students are worth it — and we do it all for them." Read now: https://lnkd.in/guKTAgeB

What do you think ? Sports are Extracurricular activities🤔 Sports offer valuable life lessons such as discipline, teamwork, resilience, and time management, which are crucial for personal development. Treating sports as an extra-curricular activity rather than a core part of a student’s education overlooks these benefits. By integrating sports into mainstream education, schools can encourage a more holistic approach to learning, where physical, mental, and emotional growth are all prioritized. It’s essential for parents, educators, and the wider community to rethink the role of sports in shaping well-rounded individuals. At Vega Schools, we encourage and motivate our learners to actively participate in various games and sports. Our curriculum is designed to integrate sports and academics seamlessly, ensuring that neither is compromised. We take pride in being one of the best schools that fosters both intellectual and physical growth, creating well-rounded individuals for the future.

Extra Curricular Activities Can Enhance “Grit” by Manon Dulude Ph.D. Angela Duckworth, author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, had a strong intuition that Grit is enhanced by participating in extra-curricular activities. There are countless studies suggesting that kids who are involved in extra-curricular activities have better grades, higher self-esteem, and are positioned to do better in their lives in general. She points out that activities led by a demanding and supportive adult, such as a coach or teacher, “are designed to cultivate interests, practice, purpose and hope.” So dance studios, dojos, and swimming clubs are breeding grounds for Grit. Providing children with a combination of challenge (mastering something new) and intrinsic motivation (something that they are motivated to do on their own) seems to be the optimal reality to foster Grit. She points out that remaining involved in an activity for a minimum of two years allows a person to see improvement in their performance. Therefore dedicating enough time to experience mastery is a crucial component in the process of developing Grit. Duckworth also points out that activities are a way for youth to practice and develop passion and perseverance – all crucial to achieving long-term goals. Continued at https://lnkd.in/dbWH798e
