𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 ‘𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞’ | Bloemenveiling Plantion, Koninklijke Vereniging Bloemist Winkeliers, Smithers-Oasis, and Groothandelscentrum Plantion organized the event ‘Sustainable Business for the Future’ this past Tuesday in Ede. The organizers aim to inspire and inform florists about sustainable opportunities. In addition to several growers, such as Marginpar, Tesselaar Alstroemeria, and Decorum Company, Flower Council of Holland was also present at the event. With a so-called 'trend cabinet,' filled with plants, flowers, and accessories, we showcased the 2025 Horticulture Trend 'Slow Life,' which attracted a lot of enthusiasm. The trend refers to uncertain times, where there is sometimes a need to make the world smaller and more manageable. At home, in our own little bubble, we find safety, trust, and connection. In this way, we reduce loneliness and hardening, even in our surroundings. Additionally, we feel responsible for the climate and our health and actively work on these areas. 🌿 Celebrating sustainable practices this International Earth Day at NP Rugs! Our Nettle Rugs are a true testament to our commitment to the planet. Here's how we do it: Why Himalayan Nettles? 1. Harvested during the winter, the fibers from the nettle are extremely absorbent, anti microbial and anti bacterial. Being biodegradable, they need less resource to collect the cotton, being kinder to planet earth. 2. Old Nettle Plants with dry stems are picked specifically, making room for new and healthier nettle plants to grow. This solidifies the soil quality and also helps absorb more Carbon dioxide from the surrounding. 3. Once the hardy woody bits have fallen off, the fibers are picked by hand, giving it an extra attention to detail by our amazing artisans. 4. After the carding process, the nettle fibers are spun while they are still coarse. The nettle fibers are converted into yarn using an organically crafted Drop spindle or traditional Charka. 5. Nettle Fibers have high tensile strength and great resistance to wrinkling with it's loft similar to cotton. Unused threads are reused to create smaller products like fishing nets, coasters and bags. Growing in greenhouses in the Netherlands is logical and essential. In the last monthly issue of Primeur I was given the opportunity to give my opinion on the usefulness and necessity of maintaining greenhouse horticulture in the Netherlands. For many countries, Dutch greenhouse horticulture is an example of how to grow more sustainable food and ornamentals. Strangely enough, there is a discussion going on in the Netherlands about, among other things, the economic contribution of greenhouse horticulture. Apart from the fact that climate change only increases the possibilities of high-tech greenhouses to grow sustainable food and ornamental plants, the ecosystem in the Netherlands is unique and important. In this article I have tried to make a plea to emphasize the usefulness of this ecosystem and the global opportunities for high-tech greenhouses in the field of sustainability. They are the ultimate illustrations of the idea of sustainability when it comes to living on a planet dominated by humans. Humans who claim the land and need to eat. Constantly and everywhere. Made me ponder upon how permaculture can serve us and the planet in the future in Chapter 2 of my eco-parable “Where the Water Flows” https://lnkd.in/efcJGNeJ The models used in permaculture gardens comprise the combination of various and often overlapping or complementary approaches, such as composting, companion planting (with preference given to native plants), long-term growing (often via the use of perennial plants), animal integration (!), and no-till. It results in harmony, diversity, and resilience. In a nutshell, all as close to how the Nature would have done it if She had a garden. A variation (or a close synonym) of permaculture gardens is the concept of permaculture food forests. They mimic the major layers of a wild forest when creating a system: bigger trees, smaller trees, shrubs, herbs, and ground cover. Here is your recipe for getting fruits, nuts, berries, veggies, mushrooms, and herbs! The motto of permaculture is “Plant Once. Eat Forever”. As exaggerated as it sounds, it is still very close to the truth - and has always been. The history of permaculture and food forests dates back to the early civilizations and ancient agricultural practices. It is said that when the New World colonists arrived to the foreign lands, they saw forests and did not realize they were looking at artificially created, managed systems. Nowadays, while some people are keeping the ancient tradition alive by taking care of the centuries-old food forests, others rediscover the permaculture approach in the new gardens established.
