Targeted Killings: A Western World Method for Asymmetric Warfare My new article analyzing the evolution and impact of targeted killings in counterterrorism is now available. Drawing on extensive research, it offers insights into the effectiveness and limitations of this controversial tactic. Key findings include: * Targeted killings can have short-term disruptive effects on terrorist groups, but their long-term strategic value is debated. * The tactic appears most effective when used selectively as part of a broader counterterrorism strategy. * Technological advancements, particularly in drone warfare, have revolutionized targeted killing capabilities. * Nearly 100 countries now possess military drone technology, raising concerns about proliferation. * Crucially, as an isolated tactic, targeted killings have limited long-term impact on veteran terrorist organizations. The article concludes that while tactically effective, targeted killings must be integrated into a comprehensive approach that includes diplomatic, economic, and social measures to address the root causes of extremism. November analysis: “Show and Tell: Expert Perspectives on Indicators and Warning Approaches for External Terror Ops” by Brian Dodwell, Don Rassler, and Paul Cruickshank “It is critical for the counterterrorism community to have a sophisticated understanding of the components of external operations and the indicators that help to signal that a network’s interest, capabilities, or attack planning are advancing. It is even more critical to be able to effectively provide warning when an external operations terror attack is imminent. To help enhance and validate existing indicators and warning approaches, the authors conducted a survey of 30 practitioners, academics, and private sector specialists to acquire unique and varied insights on this important issue. This article provides a summary of key indicators that could indicate a change in a group’s intent and capability to conduct an external operations attack. It then examines existing shortfalls and offers potential solutions in the areas of artificial intelligence, data prioritization, and information sharing, before concluding with some unique models to consider from other fields that can help existing I&W approaches to evolve.” Access the article here: https://lnkd.in/era3acna

The head of the United States military in Africa is vigorously defending his anti-terrorism strategy on the continent and pledged to pursue it despite a wave of criticism and a drift by African nations towards seeking aid to security from Russia. In an interview on Wednesday May 29 during Africa Lion, a war simulation exercise in Morocco, Gen. Michael Langley blamed a wave of Russian disinformation for anti-American sentiment in unstable regions. He said the military must reaffirm how its long-standing strategy can promote stability throughout the Sahel, the semi-arid region south of the Sahara Desert. The 6,000 U.S. military personnel stationed in Africa face new setbacks as the governments of Chad and Niger - two key regional allies - welcome Russian forces and paramilitaries and pressure them to vacate posts previously identified as critical for monitoring security challenges. IntelCenter's ICD Domain GenAI offers its insights on where it is now better than a human intelligence analyst, where humans are better and the power of combining the two. It helps inform the discussion on how to integrate GenAI capabilities with human intelligence analysts in order to tackle problem sets that far exceed the number of human intel analysts available. Even for the most resourced national security issues, it is clear to me now that GenAI is the only way we can achieve a high level of success. The focus of this is IntelCenter's non-state actor focused ICD Domain GenAI but the themes discussed apply across all national security sets and for other GenAI implementations. #counterterrorism #terrorism #nationalsecurity #osint #cai #IntelCenter #ICD #genai #ai #intelligenceanalysis
