Great discussions today at the #betterpublicservices conference on evidence-informed policy and services. This includes access to and use of data, promoting trust and legitimacy in policy to achieve impact, and promoting design in policy development including the role of the tertiary system and academia in evidence for policy. #Science4policy Deirdre Lillis Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science

This Week in Evidence-use in #Education OTT’s Marcela Morales Hidalgo, who leads our evidence-use in education practice, recently attended the International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement (ICSEI) 2024 Conference in Amsterdam. She shared insights from a comprehensive review of policy labs and evidence use in education developed through our learning partnership with the Jacobs Foundation. Key takeaways: ➡️ Policy labs can learn from #EvidenceInformedPolicyMaking, where evidence must be strategically positioned to influence decisions—not just produced. ➡️ These labs are uniquely placed to connect local evidence with larger research systems, fostering more adaptable, data-driven policies. ➡️ Politics can’t be avoided. EdLabs must navigate the fine line between political engagement and impartiality to make evidence count. ⭐️NEW Taylor & Francis PUBLICATION Theorising the status of VET from the institutional logics perspective Dr Don Zoellner, Northern Institute Honorary 📄 https://lnkd.in/gMpiFW_q Open Access ABSTRACT This article explores the historically contingent and normative descriptions of vocational education and training (VET) as a low-status alternative in Australia’s socio-economic process of skill and knowledge development. Rather than repeating well-rehearsed shibboleths, this retheorisation of how status works applies an institutional logics perspective as a novel addition to existing research in the sector. Historical reports and contemporary discourses sourced from submissions to a parliamentary inquiry into VET’s status are used to determine which logics are used in the sector. They demonstrate that the sector’s dominant institutional logics derive from the state, market and professional orders of society. These three share an emphasis upon the use of status to determine how organisations and individuals allocate limited and valuable attention to their operating environments. The institutional logics perspective provides a meta-theoretical challenge to traditional depictions of what status represents and, in turn, suggests how public policy can be re-imagined, thus improving the sector’s standing and consequent value propositions. #VET #status #institutionallogics #publicpolicy #attention LINK https://lnkd.in/gMpiFW_q

Committed and engaged students have always been a great motivation for me 3 days of intense teaching at the Department of Public Policy Central European University in Vienna was again a great experience of linking future leaders of our society with the current challenges in policy making. EVIDENCE FOR POLICY IMPACT is not only the name of the master course, it is also my lifelong commitment. In the realm of policy-making, evidence serves as the bedrock upon which informed decisions are built. It's not merely about having data but about understanding its implications, context, and reliability. Evidence empowers policymakers to navigate through the intricate web of societal challenges, guiding them towards solutions that are not only theoretically promising but also practically feasible. By embracing evidence-based approaches, policymakers can mitigate the risk of unintended consequences and ensure that their initiatives yield the desired outcomes. Whether it's crafting healthcare policies, environmental regulations, or economic strategies, evidence provides the crucial insights needed to tailor interventions effectively. Furthermore, evidence-based policy-making fosters transparency and accountability. It enables stakeholders to scrutinize decisions, assess their rationale, and hold policymakers accountable for their choices. This fosters trust in governance and enhances public confidence in the effectiveness of policies. In today's fast-paced and interconnected world, the need for evidence-driven decision-making has never been more pressing. By championing evidence-based policy-making, we can foster innovation, tackle complex challenges, and create a more resilient and prosperous society for generations to come. Let's harness the power of evidence to shape a brighter future together! #EvidenceInfromedPolicy #PolicyMaking #DataforPolicy #MasterCourse 🌐

Today I was in Birmingham for the UK Research and Innovation Cross Research Council Responsive mode (CRCRM) Round 1 Cohort event to learn about exciting funded projects and to share insights with fellow reviewers. Thanks to travel companion Professor Deirdre McKay. Great discussions with simone abram on the role Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences play in these cross-council spaces and how they are (mis-)understood. Thanks to Alison Park for listening and for asserting the inclusive approach and ethos of this scheme. Food for thought as we move towards the next training for reviewers and panellists Hilary McNeill Samantha Aspinall. How are the arts and humanities perceived within an interdisciplinary landscape? How do we promote more submissions from the Arts and Humanities? How to avoid the pitfalls of being perceived as auxiliary /ancillary subjects/fields in projects which are challenge-led and/or aimed at problem-solving? And what are the unintended consequences (and exclusions) of institutional sifts/approval as eligibility to apply? During my PhD, I encountered a challenge of interpreting conflicting opinions from interviewees regarding the school fruit scheme's adoption decision. My question was whether or not to remove the structure that participants had differing views on. To address this, I sought guidance from the qualitative methods literature. In the upcoming System Dynamics conference, I am going to share my findings and seek insights from others who may have faced similar challenges and how they approached them. #ISDC2024 #systemdynamics #qualitative_methods
