As we move into the first weekend of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, here are some things to consider (and, of course, actionable insight).

During National Native American Heritage Month, we honor the rich cultures, traditions, and histories of Native American communities across the United States. From the thousands of years of wisdom passed down through generations, to the resilience and strength of Native peoples who continue to thrive today, their stories are woven into the fabric of this land. Let’s take this time to reflect on the incredible contributions of Native Americans, not just during this month, but every day. From art and language, to activism and leadership, Indigenous peoples continue to shape the future while honoring their past. As we celebrate, let’s also acknowledge the ongoing struggles faced by Native communities and work toward greater equity, understanding, and respect. Violence and discrimination still disproportionately affect Native communities. It’s imperative to amplify Indigenous voices, support Native-led initiatives, and ensure that the rich cultural heritage of Native peoples is preserved for future generations. 🦅💫

May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Did you know May holds particular significance, marking the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in 1843 and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869, largely built by Chinese laborers? This month's celebrations trace back to the dedication of a week in May 1979 to commemorate Asian Pacific American Heritage, later expanding to officially recognize the diversity of AANHPI cultures by Congress in 1992. In his 2021 Presidential Proclamation, President Biden highlighted the remarkable history and achievements of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. Despite challenges, these communities have shown resilience, courage, and leadership, enriching America's culture and society with their diverse contributions. AANHPIs have played integral roles in shaping the United States' history and identity.
