Today, November 8th, is National Indigenous Veterans Day. While the exact number of Indigenous People's veterans is not known, they have defended our country in large numbers since our earliest days. Indigenous People's defended these lands even when not viewed as equals in society. This is one of the many reasons that we honour Indigenous veterans with a commemorative day specifically for them. In many militaries, commissioned officers above the rank of captain, and equivalent in services, are permitted to retain their rank after retirement as an honourific. This practice is especially common for higher ranks, such as those with earned stars. It's widely regarded as a mark of respect for their professionalism, dedication and expertise, both within military and civilian spheres. This recognition represents one of the highest honours bestowed upon an individual officer by the country. Upon retirement, they are no longer considered ordinary citizens; they carry the responsibility to uphold the dignity and decorum of the armed forces. Those who choose to relinquish such recognition may voluntarily decommission themselves and pursue a civilian path. Noteworthy world leaders have followed this path, being recognized solely as civilian heads of state or in other positions without a retired rank.

Today, we honor the valiant heroes of the Kargil War, whose unparalleled bravery and sacrifice safeguarded our nation’s freedom. In 1999, our soldiers faced insurmountable odds, battling in the harshest conditions to protect our borders.
