This month Cox Engineering had the privilege of visiting New Mission High School. During our visit we shared insights into the rewarding career paths available in the skilled trades, particularly in HVAC and the life changing opportunities this industry can offer. • Our goal was to inspire these bright young minds to consider a future in the trades and the careers you can have around them as well. We discussed how these careers provide stability, growth and pride in building our communities. • It was an honor engaging with these students and demonstrating that success is within reach regardless of background. We believe in breaking barriers and creating opportunities for everyone to thrive. Thank you to New Mission High School for welcoming us to your classrooms - we look forward to supporting your journeys ahead.

I had the privilege of being the keynote speaker for the UF Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering Order of the Engineer ceremony this past weekend, where engineering graduates pledged an oath to uphold integrity and professionalism in their careers. My advice to them–and to all who are entering this remarkable profession–was this: 1. Impactful work isn’t guaranteed just because you’re an engineer. You must find your impact in every task and have the courage to speak up when there is none to be found. 2. The engineer you become will be shaped by the people you engineer for. Put yourself in an environment that fosters everyday integrity, so that it’s not a test you pass once, but a value you live everyday. 3. No one is perfect, so don’t build your systems assuming that they are. Even well-intentioned engineers can create dangerous products if they forget that they are building for humans, and that humans make mistakes. To all the Fall 2024 graduates, congratulations on achieving this incredible milestone! I’m excited to see how you bring your curiosity, creativity, and courage into the workforce.

Great news, Triton Engineers: the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering jumped to the #11 spot in the U.S. News & World Report Best Engineering Schools ranking, up from #12 last year. Among public engineering schools in the nation, the Jacobs School ranks #7. “I am thrilled that our school-wide ranking improved this year. I am proud, I am excited – and I am also right back to work,” said Albert "Al" P. Pisano, Ph.D., Dean of the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering and Special Adviser to the Chancellor. “Rankings are recognition rather than definition, and these rankings recognize yet again our world-class school. We advance engineering and computer science research and education for the public good, and it’s wonderful to be recognized as we do this important work.” Included in the U.S. News rankings methodology for the first time this year are citation metrics, a measure of an institution’s intellectual impact. We rank #1 in the nation among public engineering schools for citations per publication, a testament to our world-class thought leadership. Congratulations, and THANK YOU, to all of our graduate students, postdocs, research scientists, faculty, staff, community and industry partners, whose hard work and dedication is reflected in this top rank. 1wKudos to Cox Engineering and New Mission High School! Hope to see more efforts to market the trades (plumbing & HVAC, carpentry, electrical, iron work, plastering & brick work, etc.) to the youth; particularly the groups locked out of these trades from the 1960’s). Introduction to these trades need to begin at early adolescence if not much earlier. Think about your toddler children. Drive by construction sites with your little ones and note how they get fascinated with the activity. Gives us a clue, right? If we’re serious about opening up doors to ANYONE inclined.
