Among the qualities of operation of internal combustion engines used in sucker rod pumping units stand the fairly constant torque developed over a large range of speeds, which is at the same time one of its main advantages over the electric motor drive, by ensuring proper operation under the cyclic loads of pumping. Even with this benefit, an unbalanced pumping unit would still result in inefficient performance of the drive, as well as negative consequences for the gearbox and the entire system.
