What were our top conservation moments this year?🏆 Research and Policy Coordinator Meg took a closer look at Old Growth Management Areas (OGMAs) - places listed as 'protected' - and uncovered that they don't actually do a good job of protecting old growth... 🪵They contained over 27,000 hectares of 'cutblocks' (where trees are currently or have been cut) 🪵By area, less than 30% were made up of old growth forest across BC 🪵37% of individual OGMAS didn't have ANY old growth Meg wrote a report with her findings called 'Felling Short', urging for stronger protections for old growth forests to conserve endangered ecosystems and help BC accurately get to our target of protecting 30% of land and water by 2030 (known as '30x30'). 💭 Learn more: https://ow.ly/we3n50Uq9Ok 🌲Read 'Felling Short': https://ow.ly/K7uW50Uq9Oi #OldGrowth #OldGrowthForest #BC #30x30 #OGMA #Conservation

Nature Recovery In Action ☘️ 🌿 We’re proud to be working with the Wendling Beck Environment Project – a ground-breaking, 2,000-acre nature recovery project in the heart of #Norfolk. It has been great helping Glenn Anderson and his team on this pioneering #habitat creation project. The project aims to create a diverse range of #grassland, #woodland and #wetland habitats, restore river quality and adopt regenerative #farming practices. It will bring about wider social and environmental benefits: provide access to the public at large to a unique landscape, enable education and learning opportunities; deliver improvements in biodiversity, water, soil, and air. It also paves the way to meet Biodiversity Net Gain (#BNG) requirements through the purchase of environmental credits. Here’s a sneak peek of the Albanwise Environment self-loading forage wagon in action, as captured by our team. Massive thank you to North Norfolk Coastal Group, WWF and Norfolk Rivers Trust for funding the wagon. It is partnerships such as these that can drive meaningful progress towards restoring our natural landscapes. In the #SolomonIslands, DT Global is supporting the Solomon Islands Government and the Millennium Challenge Corporation’s Threshold Program in establishing forest carbon projects. One of these initiatives focuses on conserving more than 600 hectares of the last remaining lowland rainforest in the Western Province at Viru Harbor, known as Sobehatunga by the landowners. This project is working to: - Protect plant and animal diversity. 🦎 - Create income opportunities for the community through the sale of carbon credits. 💰 - Reduce reliance of unsustainable logging practices. 🪓 - Promote alternative forest management approaches. 🌳 Initiatives like this drive change that inspires—I encourage you to reflect on how we can inspire and drive change in our own way. #WeAreDTGlobal #Environment #GenerationRestoration #ForNature #OurFuture #ClimateChange #Partnerships #IWork4DTGlobal #DFAT

World Environment Day 2024 is themed 'land restoration, desertification and drought resilience'. Now, as we can all attest to, Scotland is not known for its deserts or drought but we do have some impressive land restoration projects underway. Check out this major land restoration project in The Highlands where a consortium of landowners and estates are working in partnership to make land more ecologically diverse and more resilient to climate change - reaching across transitional boundaries. Donald Rowantree, of CORROUR LANDS LIMITED said: “We’ve been working to restore natural habitats at a landscape scale for some years, and this partnership offers the opportunity to expand that work across ownership boundaries. The sharing of knowledge and expertise will also allow our resources to go further and be more effective.” Peter Cairns, from rewilding charity SCOTLAND: The Big Picture and convener of Loch Abar Mòr, said: 'efforts of individual landowners to restore nature on their property very often stopped and started at the estate boundary, with the work more effective when working collaboratively and at scale.' Once again proof that collaboration is key to drive sustainable goals at pace. #landrestoration #worldenvironmentday #scotland #sustainabuild #collaboration https://lnkd.in/exWPpZEz

PBS recently aired the first episode of a two-part series focusing on the efforts to restore the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), a crucial 156-mile estuary on Florida's east coast, which significantly contributes $7.6 billion annually to the local economy. The IRL has been severely impacted by nutrient pollution, leading to harmful algal blooms, fish kills, and extensive seagrass loss. Despite continuous efforts by local and state organizations, these issues persist. In 2023, Brevard County, supported by a grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, collaborated with AECOM to test the effectiveness of our Algae Harvesting and Hydronucleation Flotation Technology (HFT) in aiding the lagoon's restoration. This research successfully treated over 4 million gallons of water, resulting in increased levels of dissolved oxygen, a key factor in the health of aquatic ecosystems. However, while these initial results are promising, further work is necessary to develop a comprehensive restoration plan for the IRL. Stay tuned for further updates on this important environmental initiative. https://lnkd.in/eMu9etQh #aecom AECOM - Environmental Services #algaeharvesting #saveourlagoon #Krystelknowles

For anyone in Canberra on 24 July, come along to the National Press Club lunchtime address. Jamie Pittock, PhD and Martine Maron are going to launch the Wentworth Group's Blueprint for Repairing Australia's Landscapes. The Blueprint is a comprehensive assessment of the actions and (indicative) investment required to repair Australia's soils, native vegetation, inland waters, coasts and estuaries, and threatened species. A key take-away - the repair effort is not only affordable and achievable, it is urgent, essential and in the national interest. It will take a concerted and coordinated effort, and greater investment across all levels of Government and the private sector. But the good news is that we know what is needed and we know how to do it. First Nations have been Caring for Country for millennia. NRMs, landcare groups, local community groups, restoration practitioners and everyday Australians have been working to protect and our restore our unique environments for decades. There is a huge number of organisations and individuals ready and eager to scale up. Let's get to it. https://lnkd.in/gHKu9xWx

The #Watershed #Restoration and the Restoration Economy panel during the Indigenous Resource Opportunities Conference shared so many valuable insights. Here are just a few from Jason Hwang, Chief Program Officer at the Pacific Salmon Foundation: • “You can’t take #salmon and separate them from a watershed. You can't separate what happens in terms of #economicdevelopment from what happens in the watershed. These are interconnected and we can't put them in compartments and try to manage them independently. Restoration used to be a nice-to-do. Things changed. Our watersheds, ecosystems, salmon populations, and communities are under stress. The impacts from #climatechange are changing things like we've never seen. Restoration is not a nice-to-do anymore. It's a have-to-do. We have to invest in it seriously and do it forever if we want to sustain our #naturalresources and the economies, lifestyles, and values that we have and that we're responsible for.” • “When I started as a professional, the Early Stuart sockeye that run up the Fraser River past Prince George used to be about 800,000. That was in 1993. In 2021, that run was down to 50,000 fish. That's a 94% decline...We're not talking about the extinction of the Dodo or dinosaurs, we're talking about losing a precious natural resource right here, right now, right before our eyes. This is the reason we need to start thinking about the restoration economy and taking it seriously...It's not just about salmon. If you restore salmon, you restore opportunities to fish, you restore economy, you restore Indigenous opportunity, rights, and cultural experiences that we are losing.” • “Who should make decisions around...what happens in a watershed? It shouldn't be a public servant who gets sent to the...watershed. It should be the people that live there. The people that get benefits and endure consequences. Good governance needs to become place-based and accountable to the Indigenous peoples that have the rights and knowledge.” • "There is no comprehensive plan for salmon. If you ask 'who's in charge' or 'show me the top 10 priorities' – there's no such thing. That is the root of the problem. That is what we are trying to solve...with relatively basic principles and things we could implement almost immediately if we choose to." Global Public Affairs #bcpoli

Call for Scotland to declare itself the world’s first rewilding nation. The Scottish Rewilding Alliance has launched a Rewilding Nation Charter, as despite its stunning and spectacular landscapes and seeming wildness, Scotland (along with the rest of the UK) is considered one of the most nature-depleted and ecological degraded parts of the world. Ranked 212 out of 240 countries for the state of its nature with 1 in 9 of its species at risk of extinction. Rewilding offers hope Rewilding offers a means to push back against this, helping stem this loss of life from the land by restoring resilient and life-rich ecosystems. However, at the present time, only around 2% of Scotland’s land area is committed to rewilding. In light of this, the Scottish Rewilding Alliance have launched a campaign to seek government commitment to declare Scotland the world’s first Rewilding Nation, committing to rewilding 30% of its land and sea, helping reverse #biodiversityloss while supporting a more sustainable future for the country. Not only would this shift help seed nature recovery, it would also help safeguard ecosystem services in the midst of a changing climate, while creating economic opportunities. #HopeintoAction Picture a more life rich and vibrant Scotland with a rich tapestry of woodlands, wetlands, peatlands and meadows, and coastlines enriched and buffered by oyster beds, seagrass beds and kelp forests. A more resilient landscape that supports local enterprises, empowers communities, and helps kindle a sense of kinship and connection with the natural world and all its wonders. You can support the campaign by signing the national charter here: https://lnkd.in/eWKu9Rd8 #rewilding #naturesrecovery #resilientlandscapes Image credit: craighunter from Pixabay
