Introducing POCUS into a medical practice may seem daunting. Some concerns include lack of time, negative patient perception, and malpractice. How do you introduce POCUS safely and effectively? In a recent webinar by EchoNous, I was fortunate to discuss POCUS adoption with Dr. James McLenna and William Steelman, DO, FACOI. They both successfully implemented POCUS into their #familymedicine and #directprimarycare practices respectively. Here are 5 practical tips from our discussion: 1. Be humble and patient. Most patients will appreciate your commitment to expanding your clinical skills. Mastery takes time – American College of Emergency Physicians POCUS guidelines recommend at least 25 scans of each exam type for competency. 2. Start small by focusing on 1 or 2 POCUS applications initially. No need for advanced measurements when learning basic ultrasound. 3. Order a confirmatory test while learning POCUS and use every imaging test as an opportunity to practice. 4. Learn from other ultrasound users in your field – techs, cardiologists, sports medicine doctors, etc. 5. Stay focused on the benefits of POCUS: enhancing patient care, experience, and provider satisfaction. Small setbacks are part of the learning process. The following professional standard was approved by the College’s governing Council composed of physicians and public members: Professional Standards Regarding the Responsibility for Post-Surgical Care. https://lnkd.in/eh_Djmtp The standard was developed in response to requests from physicians for the need for clear guidance regarding responsibilities concerning post-surgical care. The standard acknowledges the importance of clear communication as follows: The delivery of post-surgical care must put the needs of the patient first. Furthermore, the responsibility for post-operative care of patients must be clear to the patient and the medical team. It has long been a source of tension and uncertainty within medicine, generating friction between physicians performing an operation or procedure, primary care providers, and emergency departments. As a result of uncertainty and inconsistent practice, patients are often confused as to who is responsible for their post-operative care.

🚀Continuing my journey in healthcare with a deep dive into heart medical terminology!🫀 Yesterday’s lecture on the cardiovascular system has truly expanded my understanding of key terms and concepts, such as: Myocardium: the muscular tissue of the heart, responsible for its powerful contractions. Arrhythmia: any abnormal rhythm of the heartbeat, which can have significant implications for patient care. Angioplasty: a life-saving procedure that opens up blocked blood vessels to restore proper blood flow. Atherosclerosis: the narrowing of arteries due to plaque buildup, a major cause of heart attacks and strokes. These terms are more than just words—they represent critical knowledge that healthcare professionals rely on to diagnose and treat cardiovascular conditions effectively. As someone aiming to contribute to the healthcare sector in an administrative capacity, understanding this terminology is essential for bridging communication between clinical staff and operational teams. I'm excited to continue building on this foundation as I work toward a future in healthcare administration. Knowledge like this reminds me of the vital role administrators play in facilitating the best care possible. #CardiovascularHealth #MedicalTerminology #HealthcareEducation #HealthcareAdministration #HeartHealth #LifelongLearning

In Hello Sono's latest blog post, we break down the key elements from my podcast interview with Janette Wider from Healthcare Purchasing News. Here are the key takeaways from our discussion: Definition and Purpose: POCUS is a bedside ultrasound performed by clinicians to make real-time clinical decisions. It offers quick, focused assessments compared to comprehensive ultrasounds. Expanding Applications: Beyond hospitals, POCUS is increasingly utilized in primary care, sports medicine, aesthetics, and urgent care settings, enhancing diagnostic capabilities and procedural safety. Benefits: Improves patient care by enabling prompt, informed treatment decisions. Increases efficiency by reducing the need for separate radiology visits. Offers cost savings for patients and the healthcare system. Enhances patient experience through immediate insights and stronger clinician-patient relationships. Training Requirements: Clinicians, including physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, require specialized training comprising online learning, hands-on workshops, and supervised practice to ensure proficiency in POCUS. Implementation Strategies: Secure buy-in from key stakeholders within the healthcare facility. Involve IT and biomedical departments early to address workflow and integration with electronic health records. Adhere to established guidelines, such as those from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), to ensure effective and safe POCUS integration. Future Outlook: POCUS is poised to become a standard tool in clinical practice, akin to the stethoscope, due to its ability to enhance diagnostic accuracy, procedural safety, and overall patient care. Hello Sono supports medical practices in building high-quality, compliant, and profitable POCUS programs through our longitudinal training program and implementation guidance.
