Yay! Correcting information by commenting on social media posts containing "fake" news/ misinformation is effective! Boo! Commenting authoritatively with incorrect information is also effective... at creating doubt about fact-based posts. As Oreskes Naomi called them, the "merchants of doubt" have been using these tactics for many decades. It's only recently that social media has allowed such widespread proliferation of misinformation. Studies like this are essential to grasping the entirety of the modern information ecosystem, and learning how to proactively communicate doubt-resistant information. Also, omg, the citizen-online website is just SO good. If you are a scicomm trainer/teacher, put this in your folder of great scicomm examples.
📣 This almost comes a bit late since we are already under full steam, but I want to welcome Jane Mitchell to my team on the www.citizen-online.org project! I got to know her when she took my module on misinformation at Exeter. She is extremely talented and I am super excited that she is now supporting the work on our book. Welcome Jane, it is a pleasure to work with you! 🔎 In this project, we ask a simple question: whether social media users can do something against misinformation, for instance by writing comments. 🙏 I am really grateful for the wonderful people who came on board to work on this project, often despite a lot of other commitments. We have a great team and I truly appreciate the positive and collegial atmosphere we have, as it is not something that can be taken for granted. I am also indebted to Jason Reifler because I learned a lot from him when it comes to teamwork! ⚡ We had some tough times with huge amounts of work, and I am just also really grateful for the faith people have put into the project (and perhaps in me). 👩🎓 It is also really a joy to see that some of my Exeter students come on to the project, contribute in one way or another, and move on to exciting next steps in their careers! Chiara Ricchi is a coauthor on our first paper output from this project (https://lnkd.in/e747gnJ6). She is now working at YouGov! Hannah Kroker was a student at Exeter when she started on the project and is now finishing her MSc at UCL in London! We’ve still got a bit of work ahead, so let me also take this opportunity to pause and say thanks to the team Sabrina Stöckli Jason Reifler Ben Lyons Hannah Kroker Chiara Ricchi Besir Ceka and Jane Mitchell Many thanks of course also to the British Academy (grant SRG20\200348)!
