The European Union's new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act comes into effect today, 1st August, aiming to ensure the ethical and responsible use of AI across various industries. Organizations could face fines of up to €35 million or 7% of global turnover for non-compliance. The Act classifies AI systems into four risk categories and mandates different compliance measures for each. While most provisions will be enforceable by 2026, certain rules, including those on banned AI systems, will take effect sooner. The legislation prohibits manipulative AI applications and unauthorized facial recognition practices, emphasizing risk management, data governance, transparency, human oversight, and cybersecurity. To help organizations comply, the article recommends an AI Ethics and Governance assessment and outlines five steps: conducting a gap analysis, developing governance measures, providing training, continuous monitoring, and establishing comprehensive AI governance. While the Act seeks to balance innovation and ethics, its definitions may lead to subjective interpretations. Organizations are encouraged to adopt transparent and ethical practices in AI deployment as regulations continue to evolve. The importance of guidance in navigating these regulations is underscored, along with the opportunities AI offers. Here's an overview from Version 1 with some practical support.
