With the UEFA EURO 2024 well underway, we've been wondering what preparations were required to get the German stadiums and fan zones in tip top technical shape, ready for the masses who were about to descend on the German cities. It seems that Deutsche Telekom led the charge with major 5G upgrades in all ten stadiums, installing 750 new 5G antennas. It's no surprise that mobile connectivity is the key focus with promised data throughput speeds of up to 1.2Gbit for the fans which seems to be a substantial improvement over previous capabilities. Fixed connectivity also wasn't ignored, with 65km of new fibre, over 900 additional switches and over 1,300 access points newly installed to ensure sufficient capacity for the worldwide media coverage. If Deutsche Telekom are capable of all that, getting England to the final shouldn't be too difficult, right?! Continuation on the topic of season ticket effectiveness... Bundesliga International GmbH is experiencing troubles with season pass holders´ no-shows. Despite the games are sold out, the stadiums are half empty and the atmosphere is far from its peak. 📉 We all know from personal experience that it´s really hard to attend every home game. Some games are played in awkward kickoff times which are not compatible with working hours. In other cases, we have alternative program which makes us take a raincheck. What happens with the tickets? Not much. Some are shared among family members, but most happen to end unused. Very few ticketing companies offer solutions to this problem and even if they do, clubs have not hopped on the train of using them yet. I believe clubs should engage more in discovering a way how fans can either transfer their tickets, share a season pass with multiple persons, or simply resell it on a platform controlled by the clubs. 🔍 Benefits ✅ Full stadiums ✅ Electrifying atmosphere ✅ Satisfied customers ✅ Earning twice on the same ticket Tickets are currently perceived as a one time revenue stream, but what if you could change it. The error went unnoticed for months. Apparently, nobody thought to count. Math is hard & Excel is even harder. UEFA EURO 2024 is a lucrative business for UEFA Here are some large money stats. UEFA EURO 2024 is the battle for football dominance in Europe. 24 European teams take to the pitch with almost 3 million fans in the stands and billions more watching in bars and beer gardens in fan zones or at home. That's big business. So, who's making money and who's paying for the Euros? This is organized by UEFA, the Union of European Football Associations. UEFA expects the 2024 European Championship to bring in €2.4 billion in revenue, most of it from the sale of TV and marketing rights that includes sponsorships by the likes of adidas, The Coca-Cola Company, China's Alibaba Group and the state of Qatar. Hospitality sales, including VIP lounges UEFA expects expenses of €650 million €331 million in prize money for the teams. The cost of I.T. and infrastructure and salaries. UEFA is expecting a profit of €1.7 billion and this is tax-free due to an agreement with the German government. The German government also pays handsomely for the privilege of hosting the tournament. I returned back from Apple’s WWDC 2024 looking forward to watching my first match of the UEFA #Euro2024 tournament in Germany. It turned out that this would be Italy’s opening match against Albania on Saturday 15th, and I decided to see if it was available in 4K via RAI 4K. A lot of people will have done the same. However, all of us will have quickly noticed that it was not being broadcast in 4K at all, instead only in an uprezzed version of the 1080p HD HDR world feed provided by UEFA from the tournament. Meanwhile, this Summer Olympics in Paris will see live 8K footage thanks to Panasonic in collaboration with Intel, despite there being no real consumer appetite for 8K. Overall, it is disappointing that we’re not seeing further advancements from organisations such as UEFA. This is in stark contrast to domestic sports such as the Premier League producing and distributing content in higher quality formats thanks to pressure from rights holders. It also feels like a step backwards given that the 2022 FIFA World Cup was widely available in 4K HDR, not to mention that the first 4K matches from the Euros were broadcast in 2016. For users, households and fans alike, this confusion around terms and what’s available and what’s not needs to be addressed, as currently they are being short-changed. We enjoyed watching tennis from Roland Garros in 4K, and the picture quality was excellent. Bring on Wimbledon and the Olympics, with both events available in higher-quality formats.
