Let’s talk about… personal branding. In today’s economy and job sector, understanding your strengths and personal brand is crucial for career growth. I used to resist the idea of being a "brand" because I wanted to just be myself. However, I've come to realize that defining and leveraging your personal brand can significantly impact your career trajectory. I coach and mentor professionals to help them identify their personal brand and the unique value they bring to their organizations. Here’s a story that illustrates why personal branding is so essential: One of my new coaching clients, Paul , a young finance manager was turned down for a promotion. When he inquired about the decision, his supervisor told him, “Because nobody knows you.” Mike, who believed his strong work ethic and good results were well recognized, was shocked. He learned that the senior managers making the promotion decisions had no idea what he stood for or who he was as a person. Paul’s experience is a common one. Many believe that efforts, education, or performance alone are enough to secure advancement opportunities. However, in high-performing organizations where everyone is exceptional, differentiating yourself requires more than just a good reputation—it requires an outstanding personal brand. Here’s how you can start building your own personal brand: **1. Figure out what drives you.** Ask yourself questions like: What motivates you to work? What skills are you proud of? What kind of projects energize you? Your answers will help you identify the values and goals driving you, and how to make your strengths visible. **2. Align your values with your organization’s goals.** Observe successful individuals in your company and identify the traits and behaviors they exhibit. Align your skills and behaviors with these qualities to create a personal brand that supports both your aspirations and your organization’s strategic goals. **3. Map your stakeholders.** Create a stakeholder map to identify key influencers in your organization. This is not what personal branding means. Scrolling through LinkedIn, you might feel like you have to post about building a personal brand just because everyone else is doing it. But here’s the thing, you’re not on LinkedIn just for views and impressions. If you’re running a business, that's different, but if your goal is to build your brand, don’t get lost in the crowd. LinkedIn is flooded with people posting the same type of content, day in and day out. And in this, it’s easy to forget what really matters, your real life. Personal branding isn’t just about mimicking what others are doing. It’s about sharing the unique experiences, lessons, and stories that make you "you". If all you do is follow the flow, posting what everyone else is posting, you won’t grow. At some point, you’ll realize that this wasn’t what you had planned. That chasing trends and copying content doesn’t fulfill your purpose. Remember, your brand should reflect your true self, not just the latest LinkedIn trend. P.S.
