Urban design is the art and science of shaping cities, towns, and public spaces to create functional, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing environments. It brings together architecture, landscape design, transportation planning, and social policy to foster spaces that enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. From the layout of streets and parks to the integration of public transport and green spaces, urban design shapes how people interact with their surroundings. In today's rapidly urbanizing world, good urban design is critical for addressing challenges like climate change, social equity, and economic resilience. It’s about creating spaces that are not only visually appealing but also sustainable, inclusive, and adaptable for future generations. Whether it's transforming an underused area into a vibrant public square or designing walkable neighborhoods, urban design touches every aspect of our daily lives. #UrbanDesign #CityPlanning #Sustainability #SmartCities #PublicSpaces #UrbanDevelopment

I have just completed a presentation that is part of my coursework on urban design theory. This week, we discussed a very interesting topic about informal settlements, specifically life on the sidewalks. Sidewalks in developing countries in Southeast Asia undeniably serve as the center of urban activity. As mentioned by Jeffrey Hou and Manish Chalana (2016) in their book "Messy Urbanism," urban planners need to think from various perspectives. Instead of just tidying up sidewalks, we should enhance and explore the reasons behind the bustle and leverage its potential. This discussion has broadened my understanding of the importance of a more inclusive and holistic approach to urban design, which focuses not only on aesthetics but also on sustainability and community well-being.
