Distrito Natural and Petit Village: collaborative wooden homes for a sustainable world Buildings and the construction sector account for approximately 21% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). In particular, buildings were responsible for 34% of global energy demand in 2022. The six-point annual reduction estimated in 2015 to meet the 2030 decarbonization goals has now increased to ten points per year. Given these figures, it’s clear that one of the major challenges we face in the first half of the 21st century is the urgent need to rethink the places we inhabit.

Excellent guest contribution to Sustainable Biz Canada from Wendy C. Macdonald on Canada's built environment. Some great insights here: "Among the many challenges is the daunting task of retrofitting billions of square feet of existing buildings to meet Canada’s 2030 and 2050 carbon targets. If we wish to ensure the long-term survival of the modern life many of us currently enjoy, we must value the natural environment it relies upon by deeply valuing thoughtful, future-thinking design."

🏗️ How do we reduce emissions in the building sector? Finland shows us how. Green Building Council Finland has worked with organisations across construction, real estate and investment to develop 20 bespoke decarbonisation roadmaps. By providing the framework for organisations across the country to develop these roadmaps, companies can more effectively advance their #decarbonisation efforts by knowing where and how to reduce both embodied carbon (the carbon emissions associated with the creation of a building, such as materials) and operational carbon (the emissions related to the running of the building, such as energy use). This is known as Whole Life Carbon. Reducing a building's carbon output is crucial to demonstrating the #builtenvironment as a climate solution, as it currently contributes almost 40% of global energy related emissions. A spokesperson for the real-estate developer in Helsinki, Sponda Ltd, spotlighted that working with Green Building Council Finland reminded them that all the industries within the built environment are connected. She said: “Dialogue and joint innovation are crucial for us all to reach our carbon neutrality goals.” Green Building Council Finland produced these roadmaps as part of the European Regional Network (ERN) #BuildingLife project, which works across EU countries to ensure the entire lifecycle of a building is decarbonised. Australia, what's the State of Play in the continent's sustainability of our Built Environment. We need to ask and must seek answers to: is Australia’s construction occurring a best practice, of world excellence and leading the way? How does the industry, marketplace and community know? Where's the line in the sand - and how is information shared and communicated? ------------------------- "We need a just transition to decarbonisation in Europe's built environment. Climate action can simultaneously reduce emissions and advance social equity, such as achieving green and affordable housing for all." 🌏🏆 SDGs 9, 13, 17. 👗 Quote from Marta Ribera Carbó , speaking at this week's Buildings and Climate Global Forum in Paris, co-organised by the (UNEP) UN Environment Programme and French government. 7-8 Mar 2024. ℹ️ Refer to my three comments for Forum Program, Global Status Report and Industry glossary. ------------------------- At what time, do we need to enact and apply the mantra to all scales of public and private Built form, to firstly Repair, Re-purpose, Re-use, Up-cycle, Re-new, Renovate, Consolidate, and/or Re-Cycle, before we default to the business as usual to Destroy, Demolish, Landcape Change and Build new? Where is the Stop-Go, Go Slow, and No-Go signs for this? When is an empty building ready for occupation? How many empty buildings are ready to be re-purposed? How do we know, and how is this a measure of progress and sustainability? We have well and truly passed Earth's resources tipping point, of poorly constructed buildings, planned obsolescence of the life of poor quality building materials and unnecessary complexity, and excessive material over-use within footprints of the modern day trends of Built form. ie: https://lnkd.in/gVz6HKvF 🧾🖌 The Paris 7-8 Mar 2024 forum concluded with the adoption by representatives of 70 countries of the Declaration de Chaillot, a foundational document for international cooperation that will enable progress towards a rapid, fair, and effective transition of the sector. https://lnkd.in/gs9E9rbQ ⚠️ With the acceleration of climate change, buildings will increasingly be exposed to climate-related risks, particularly affecting developing countries and cities. Moreover, by 2050, 68% of the world's population will live in urban areas, and global demand for raw materials is expected to double by 2060. ------------------------- 📮 (IHRB) Institute for Human Rights and Business shared a forum summary post: https://lnkd.in/g64wCGfh and the embedded document: "Building for Today and the Future". 📣 Forum context and a call-to-action from the forum, is from Giulio Ferrini , the Head of Built Environment at IHRB: https://lnkd.in/gZQzZz9K . World Green Building Council Week 2024 Countdown! We recently caught up with our green buildings expert Patience Ruvimbo Muyambo on her #Building the #transition this past year with the company and this what she had to say: Over the past 10 Months I have had the opportunity to assess buildings and train people on #Green #Building principles. Below are some of the things I found interesting in my interactions: #Sustainability gap: While the topic is hot, many don't know how to translate it into tangible actions. Learning about Green Building principles allows anyone to be able to contribute to the change that is needed and live more sustainable. These seemingly little actions in more efficient energy and water use and better waste management when compounded have a great impact. Legislation vs. passion: Sustainability efforts are often driven by regulations rather than a genuine desire for change. Most organisations are trying to comply with demands of regulators and funders leading to a willingness to only do the bare minimum even when they have the capacity to do more. Developing nations challenge: Building greener is crucial, but outdated regulations hinder progress. There is slow adoption of legislation in the built environment that requires that we build more sustainably. One of my greatest fears is that we will develop, but unsustainably then end-up with the ‘lock-in’ effects of infrastructure, technology and product design choices similar to those made by industrialised countries post WWII. There is need for us to train current and upcoming professionals and simultaneously lobby for the necessary changes in legislation. But there's hope! By combining innovative solutions, education, and policy advocacy, we can create a more sustainable future. Are you ready to join the movement? Let's connect to discuss how we can collaborate on green building projects and initiatives. #greenbuilding #sustainability #buildingbetter #climatechange #sustainablefuture World Green Building Council Autodesk Foundation Autodesk EDGE Buildings Leonard Muyambo Kenya Green Building Society Dana Riggs Patience Ruvimbo Muyambo
