I am delighted to share that my undergraduate research project "Facing discomfort: Avoided negative affect shapes the acknowledgment of systemic racism" has been published in the journal Emotion! This would not have been possible without the mentorship and multiple revisions by Birgit Koopmann-Holm, the most remarkable professor and researcher. I would also like to thank Esveide Gonzalez-Lombera, Sophia Hartenbaum, Ayah Hilali, and the rest of my colleagues in the Culture Impacts Emotion Lab for their contributions to this project. After over 3 years, 2 studies, several moments of doubt, and countless hours of hard work, here are 2 key takeaways: 1. The more participants wanted to avoid negativity, the less likely they were to identify instances of systemic racism. 2. Wanting to avoid negativity may be a barrier to dismantling racial inequalities. DM me if you would like to read the full version!

Media Literacy Now just released an excellent short video (a PSA): Before you hand over keys to the internet be sure your child has received media literacy education. I was on the group's board for four years and we helped stimulate considerable progress. E.g., New Jersey now requires K-12 media literacy education and NSTA's The Science Teacher now has a regular column to help teachers teach students to resist scientific misinformation. Of course, much more remains to be done. https://lnkd.in/exApwae2

Assumptions form the foundation of both science and philosophy. Notably, effective assumptions are born from superior imagination and critical thinking. Therefore, my advice to you is to never rest contentedly on your existing knowledge or apply rigid formulas to your scientific understanding. Instead, let it foster in you a sense of imagination and critical thinking. This will enable you to envision and formulate the most effective ways to pioneer new scientific concepts በቅድስት ድንግል ማርያም በወለላይቱ እንዲህ እጽፋለሁም አስባለሁም ብዬ አስቤ አላዉቅም ሎል

A valuable read for historians and leadership alike, not least because it singles out the value of DoD’s historical staff. The endemic devaluing of history is about more than just keeping more of us professional historians unemployed. It’s about forgetting the centrality of having an educated citizenry in a democracy, one capable of critical thinking. It’s about intentional suppression of knowledge and expertise in the face of mass disinformation that is easily manipulated when such experts are absent. It’s about having leadership without an appreciation for (or deliberate ignorance of) context and repercussions of actions.
Preach it. All the tech in the world without proper context will just give us dumb answers more quickly. https://lnkd.in/ejfkYCSn
