I see quite a number of people around the world especially young people complain about the wrongs in their government, and while these concerns are often valid, it makes me reflect on the dynamics of a family. In a family, each member has responsibilities, yet we also rely on one another to thrive. Parents create an environment where children can grow, but the family only truly prospers when everyone contributes, supports each other, and steps up when needed. Similarly, in any country, it’s easy to point fingers at the government, expecting it to solve every problem. But what if we viewed our role in society the way we view our role in a family? Governments, like parents, set the framework through policies and resources, but it’s up to citizens to be active participants in shaping the community. We all have a part to play in creating the future we want to see, whether through work, community service, or innovative solutions to societal challenges. What would happen if we approached nation-building like building a strong family, one where collaboration, responsibility, and care for one another are central? How can we, as individuals and communities, take more ownership of the progress we seek? It's amazing to see young people everywhere creating solutions right from where they are. Their passion shows the power each of us has to make a difference. YOU TOO CAN. At the end of the day, sustainable progress is not about who leads, but about how we, as a community, come together to lead change. Reflect on this: What role are you playing in your community’s growth? How can we move from simply expecting change to actively being part of the change? #SharedResponsibility #CommunityBuilding #FamilyDynamics #NationBuilding #ActiveCitizenship #CollectiveImpact

Dedicated to the Social Work Trailblazers: As a social worker dedicated to under-resourced communities, I’ve learned that trailblazing is both a responsibility and an honor. It means stepping into spaces where resources are scarce, and the needs are immense, and refusing to accept inequity as the norm. Trailblazing requires boldness—not just to navigate systemic barriers, but to reimagine solutions that center the voices of the people we serve. It means advocating for justice while building programs that empower individuals and strengthen communities. Whether it’s connecting families to critical resources, supporting those navigating health disparities, or mentoring future professionals, I’m driven by the belief that everyone deserves access to opportunities that improve their quality of life. This work is not done alone. It is deeply collaborative, guided by the resilience and wisdom of the communities themselves. Every success, big or small, is a testament to their strength and our shared commitment to creating lasting change. To my fellow social workers, advocates, and change-makers: let us continue to challenge inequities, uplift one another, and forge pathways toward a more just and equitable future. Together, we can ensure that every community—no matter its resources—thrives. #community #healthdisparities #empoweringsocialworkers #inequities #inequalities #socialdeterminants #socialimpact #socialjustice

In a very bittersweet update, come April 17th I will be leaving Common Ground Health for an exciting new opportunity. It's hard to put into words adequately my gratitude, appreciation and love for the work that I've put my heart into over the last decade. In true Jenn fashion though, I'll share with y'all 5 things I will always take away from my time with the Healthi Kids Coalition: 1. Never underestimate the power of residents and parents in the City of Rochester. Where there's a will there's always a way – from my time here, I can list hundreds of policies, systems, and environmental changes parents, grandparents and residents have made happen here in the city. It’s the residents of the city that make it amazing. Never underestimate us. 2. Don't give up / keep pressing forward. Never take no as your first answer. So much change we’ve moved together has been because of your passion and commitment to make your community better. If the first answer is no, try a different way until you make it happen. If there’s a will, there’s always a way. Align with your allies and other changemakers willing to do this work with you. 3. Change does happen, but it's not linear. Change isn’t a straight line - centering kids and families, and moving forward racial health equity for kids is messy and time consuming. Systems aren’t made to be dismantled, they are made to be what they uphold. Change happens, and can continue to happen with dedicated folks willing to make it possible. 4. Do the crazy idea. When we started telling people that we could have play equipment at bus stops, colorful crosswalks, and takeover vacant lots for play- people thought we were insane but together, we showed them it could work. When we thought “hey let’s do a coordinated play day where everyone does a play day in their neighborhood”? We never in a million years thought we would end up having 52 locations across the city. This really goes back to #1 - so if you have the idea, try it out, do it, and see what happens! 5. Our kids are a gift - center them in the work at every possible moment. As much as we focus on adults, we also have to give space for the kids! All day every day, the kids who live in the city are a wealth of talent and expertise. I’ve been blown away at their passion and drive every time they’ve moved change with us. They can and are doing it. Folks say “they’re the future” but really they’re the right now. It’s up to us as adults to give them the platform. Seasons change, and I'm looking forward to the next adventure that will let me continue to support residents in the City of Rochester in a new way, as Deputy Chief of Staff in the City Council & Clerk’s Office. I’m not going far, and very much looking forward to supporting systems change from a whole other perspective.

🌟 Navigating the Path to Adulthood: Insights and a Time for Change! 🌟 Transitioning from Children’s to Adult Services is one of the most fascinating—and challenging—areas of public policy that I’ve had the privilege to work in. Throughout my years in local government, I’ve observed the complexities that often stump policymakers. Each transition is a journey filled with speed bumps that must be navigated to create real, tangible change. I frequently hear from my colleagues, “Can’t we track and forecast the services required in Adult Services more effectively to shape our commissioned services?” In theory, the answer is a resounding YES! ✅ Young people and their families often express their frustrations with, “Why does it feel like we’re falling off a cliff when we turn 18, 21, or 25? Why is there such a drastic shift in support?” My unwavering response is that it shouldn’t feel this way. Transitions should be gradual, allowing individuals to feel empowered and in control of their futures. 🌈 Several key factors contribute to this daunting transition: - Divergent legislations governing children’s and adult services. - Cultural differences between directorates and their operational approaches. - Disparate funding criteria impacting access to services. - The pressure on frontline practitioners to collaborate with partners for funding. - External inspection frameworks that influence service priorities. At the heart of positive change in this policy area lies Collaboration: 1. Strong ties between Children’s and Adult Services to foster a people-focused culture. 2. Authentic co-production with young people and their families to ensure their voices are heard. 3. Shared council values that prioritize holistic support. 4. Political commitment to pushing these initiatives forward. 5. Partnerships with private businesses and the third sector to create sustainable solutions. The truth is clear: a fundamental shift in our approach is necessary. We must break down the silos that exist between public service departments, fostering innovation in our solutions by looking outward to collaborate with the business sector, third sector, and our communities. If you’d like to be a part of the conversation and solution, please get in touch. 🌟💪 #PublicPolicy #YouthTransition #Collaboration #Peopletoo #CommunitySolutions #LocalGovernment

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝘁𝘀 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 In a world that increasingly promotes self-centeredness through books, movies, and influencers, we need to pause and reflect on the long-term effects of this trend. From self-help literature that prioritizes individual success to social media content focused on personal branding, the narrative of "me first" is pervasive. While self-focus can drive consumerism and benefit companies economically, it comes at a significant cost to the social fabric of our society and the integrity of family systems. The glorification of selfishness and self-importance may yield short-term gains, such as increased productivity or personal achievements, but it ultimately leads to a decline in empathy, community support, and meaningful human connections. For instance, studies show that excessive use of social media—often a hub for self-promotion—can diminish emotional well-being and reduce the quality of interpersonal relationships. Our society thrives on cooperation, understanding, and mutual respect—values that are essential for maintaining strong families and cohesive communities. As we navigate this culture of self-centeredness, it is crucial to balance personal growth with social responsibility. This balance requires conscious effort to prioritize collective well-being alongside individual goals. Supporting content and individuals that promote empathy, community-building, and genuine human connections is a good starting point. For example, we can choose to engage with media that highlights acts of kindness or uplift voices advocating for societal progress over personal gain. Moreover, practical steps can reinforce this shift in perspective. Encouraging children to participate in community service, fostering open communication within families, and supporting local initiatives that strengthen community ties can all counteract the adverse effects of self-centered narratives. By promoting these values, we can preserve the foundations of strong family bonds and supportive societies. In conclusion, while the allure of self-centeredness may seem attractive, its long-term impact poses a serious threat to our collective well-being. By consciously celebrating and fostering empathy and collaboration, we can ensure a healthier, more connected future for generations to come. #No_One_Asked #reflection #self_centered #society
