Every Plant Chief or Plant Supervisor should attend these Power Education Forums. Not only do you learn what is and will be affecting your plant but you will can expand your contacts (vendor and professional) in person. You also get to see what the latest technology is available and talk to a knowledgeable representative. There are side meetings that take place between the Power Engineer training colleges in Ontario, the TSSA with the IPE facilitating these discussions on how to better support Power Engineer student success. The results of these discussions are presented during the roundtable. One very important piece was surrounding the issue of paid/unpaid Qualifying Experience Time (QET). No, not steam time. Alternate rules allows for up to 2/3 of a Power Engineer student's experience time to be from either mechanical or refrigeration. Today's students are finding it difficult to obtain placements in approved registered plants. IPE Ontario will be working with the colleges to provide clarity for Plant Chiefs regarding student placement either as a paid, unpaid, or by bursary.
IPE Ontario has completed another successful Power Engineer Education Forum. We really appreciated the support of our sponsors. This event will be taking place again October 23-24, 2025. Setup day will be the evening of October 22, 2022. Watch this space for updates as we secure content experts for the subject that those who attended asked to hear.

UNIVERSITY OF GUYANA FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY AWOL? Perennial outages. Where is the Engineering & Technology Faculty -- what an impressive faculty name -- to the rescue? Seems like collaboration amongst these departments can diagnose and fix this perennial problem with Guyana Power and Light (another state-owned enterprise): 1) Electrical engineering; 2) Mechanical engineering; 3) Industrial engineering; and 4) Computer engineering. plus, a highly skilled management structure and an army of experienced workers at GPL, with good electrical skills and know-how for the routine tasks. Key takeaway: 1) The relentless brain drain over 5 decades has come back to haunt Guyana's development with a vengeance. 2) A successful completion and operation of the gas-to-shore project would solve the electricity supply or capacity problem, but not management problems.

This figure shows the generation of the top 10 states in the USA. From 2001 to 2022, Texas is a powerhouse! Moreover, look at the slope on those arrows—amazing growth over consecutive years. Pennsylvania and Florida have also experienced good growth. However, the other states have seen little to no growth from 2001 to 2022. California is comparable to Texas in size and area, but look at the significant difference. In 2021, Texas generated 372 TWh, while California generated 198 TWh. In 2022, they generated 525 TWh, and California generated 203 TWh. Yup, the difference has increased. Why is Texas outpacing the other 9? Project Update – 450 Bed Student Accommodation, Walkden Halls of Residence, Kingston University. Brookvex recently partnered with Equans to address persistent breakdowns in the Low-Temperature Hot Water (LTHW) system at Walkden Halls of Residence. This 450-bed student accommodation had experienced heating and hot water disruptions due to incomplete commissioning and design flaws. Through a comprehensive system validation and commissioning process, Brookvex implemented essential upgrades, including radiator valve replacements, circuit flushing, water sample testing, pump servicing, installation of new plate heat exchangers, system balancing, and a full boiler health check. The outcome? Reliable, efficient heating and hot water services with minimized disruptions for residents, improving the system's performance and reducing future maintenance costs for Kingston University. #Brookvex #Equans #KingstonUniversity #BuildingServices #MechanicalEngineering #FacilitiesManagement #SustainableBuildings #HeatingSystems #EnergyEfficiency #Infrastructure #MechanicalDesign

To properly regulate the power sector, you must have a very deep understanding of the complex interplay of engineering and economics of electricity.

Interesting summary from expert about battery power
Rowan Atkinson (aka Mr Bean aka Blackadder) writes: “Our honeymoon with electric vehicles is over - hang on to your petrol motor.” Sound advice, why? - EV’s cost more - In winter they do significantly less road miles - Having heater on in cold months drains battery extraordinarily quickly - NOT enough charging points - Lithium batteries are wknown to spontaneously combust - EV’s can be controlled by government kill switches & are reliant on the grid - Minerals required - primarily cobalt & lithium are mined in Congo where child slave are subjected to inhumane conditions BTW - Rowan has both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering (for the snickering class).
