As we celebrate Women in Construction Week, we're delighted to highlight an inspiring shift in the industry. 🚀 Last year, out of the 24,530 individuals who embarked on construction apprenticeships, a remarkable 10% were young women—a notable increase of 2% from the previous year. 🏗️💼 This positive trend not only showcases the growing opportunities within the construction sector but also underlines the pivotal role that women are increasingly playing in shaping our built environment. It's a testament to the industry's evolution and its commitment to diversity and inclusion. Join us in celebrating #WomenInConstruction and the collective strides we are making towards a more inclusive industry. #WomenInConstructionWeek #ConstructionCareers #InclusionAndDiversity #BuildingTheFuture #PolarisPersonnel #NavigatingYourNextMove #SteeringYourSuccess #EducationRecruitment

By 2031, 72% of U.S. jobs will require an education beyond high school, but Indiana is not on track to meet that need. Youth apprenticeship programs, like our Modern Apprenticeship Program (MAP), are becoming an essential tool for Indianapolis businesses in high-growth, in-demand industries to not only fill immediate roles but also ensure that they can cultivate future talent pipelines, benefiting both the employer and the local economy. Check out the National Association of Workforce Boards' recent conversation with our President + CEO Marie Mackintosh to learn how youth apprenticeships work to build new career pathways that address both the talent shortages that continue to challenge businesses across Central Indiana and the desire from workers for more options for obtaining good jobs. #NAW2024 #ApprenticeshipUSA #MAPIndy https://bit.ly/3UZhzT1

When finishing up my apprenticeship the builder I was working for had plans to train me as a supervisor & eventually run my own job. I took a massive risk and quit. Being a supervisor was not for me at that stage, was I capable, absolutely, but I just wanted to be on the tools. I returned to a company I’d spent time with earlier in my apprenticeship and got back to swinging doors in new build schools and I loved it and 5 months later the work ran out. I’d given up stable long term work from that first builder to stick to doing what I loved. We see this all the time, women finishing up their time and being moved into supervisory roles or off site all together. And I think there is often a line of thought that these women should be held responsible for the visibility of females on the tools. I too have been guilty of this same line of thinking so I was caught off guard while at an IWD event yesterday I was asked “so why are you encouraging more women on site if you didn’t remain on the tools long yourself?” And while stating that I spent 16 years on tools, which seemed to satisfy this gentleman’s inquisition, I walked away from the conversation analysing this belief system so many of us have, how could I answer it better and what did I really think about this phenomenon. I had included that as a female wanting to have children with no maternity leave in sight at the time, remaining on the tools was less of an option to me than it was for my male colleagues. So what have I resolved from this question and resultant line of thinking as I left the event? I felt guilty because I thought he is right, I do want more women on site but even I have walked away from the tools, how do I expect others to remain, then I thought It can’t possibly be up to one single female on site to be the way of attracting more women onto the tools. Perhaps we need to understand what underpins females to leave, why they’re often the ones chosen and placed into supervisory roles and how we can entice more females in without making it the responsibility of those who already exist on site. I don’t have all the answers to these questions but I can suggest that we need to stop making it the job of individual females on site to increase the numbers. The females on site are not the same people hiring. The conditions on site need to accommodate females needs to not only entice females in but also retain them. We talk often about changing the culture of construction and studies show that 33% representation of females will alter that culture but it will take a lot more than the existing 2% of females in trades to make this change.

In this week’s post, we’d like to consider how affirmative thinking also applies to End Point Assessments for neurodivergent apprentices in a way that not only ‘accommodates’ neurodiversity but truly affirms the unique abilities and strengths of each apprentice. In our new guide we consider: 👉 How to move from a one-size-fits-all approach to personalised solutions that facilitate neurodivergent apprentices' success. 👉 The importance of open dialogue and collaboration with apprentices to really get to understand their needs. 👉 Practical tips for assessors to create and facilitate inclusive environments that affirm the strengths of neurodivergent apprentices. By adopting this approach, it is possible to create assessments that don’t just remove barriers but actively support the success and growth of every apprentice. Have a look at our guide and continue the conversation about how we can create a truly inclusive assessment process for all. 💬👇 https://lnkd.in/eiSE2Kue #Neurodiversity #Inclusion #AffirmationModel #ReasonableAdjustments #EducationForAll #DiversityAndInclusion #Empowerment #NeurodiverseTalent #InclusiveAssessments #AffirmingStrengths

It's time to walk the talk on increasing women in non-traditional trades! Future Lady Tradies has 23 young women eager for apprenticeships in carpentry, electrical and plumbing. Shockingly, despite reaching out to at least 100 potential employers, they've had no success. It's puzzling that so many are talking about diversifying the industry, yet these motivated and skilled girls can't seem to catch a break. Let's give them the chance they deserve and pave the way for a more inclusive future. #womenintrades #diversityandinclusion #futureladytradies

Frustrating, stubbornly, underrepresented - 3 words I use in this article... I also talk of talent, opportunity and superpowers and firmly believe there isn't any challenge of attracting women into STEM careers that cannot be overcome.. So here's calling all businesses, industries and governments to do more and commit more to addressing the imbalance (hint: having an #apprenticeshipstateofmind will help!) #apprenticeship #womeninstem #iwd2024 QA Apprenticeships
Unlocking Diversity in STEM: The Role of Apprenticeships and Reskilling 🌟 Gender diversity in STEM fields remains a challenge, with only 23% of women enrolled in computer science programmes 👩💻 Jo Bishenden, our Managing Director for Apprenticeships, describes the need for action from both government and businesses to combat ''societal stereotypes, cultural expectations, lack of role models, and unintended bias in educational and workplace environment''. On reskilling women already in their careers, Jo explains that women ''shouldn’t feel held back by early decisions they may have made at a young age. It is important to remember that there is always another chance to develop a career path in the direction women want, through upskilling or reskilling. Businesses that build into their employee value proposition the opportunity to upskill or reskill (via apprenticeships) will quickly feel the benefit of attracting and retaining a diverse workforce and consequently encourage women and other underrepresented groups to study STEM subjects with a view to working in the data, digital and tech industries.'' Many female #apprentices are made to feel stupid … ❌ some are regularly put down and / or have unrealistic (and inconsistent compared with male apprentices) expectations put on them just because someone wants to prove a point that women dont belong in the trades ❌ some see the novelty in someone else failing and couldn’t be bothered to pitch in and support the apprentice How do we get LESS of these stories? Being critical of someone who is learning ONLY erodes their self confidence, motivation and willingness to learn If someone doesn’t know something that maybe they should … there are infinite better ways than putting someone down or watching them fail from the sidelines Maybe they haven’t even been taught what your asking or expecting of them, or maybe they have learned it previously but who taught them called it something else or taught them wrong And none of that is the apprentice’s fault We need to do better in establishing a sense of belonging for all apprentices, so they can thrive and learn the skills they need to be valuable contributors to the industry Collabaloop
