Since February, KMTV's been running a pilot for the BBC funded Local Democracy Reporting Service. KMTV journalist Gabriel Morris is the UK's first LDRS Multimedia reporter and has created nearly 100 broadcast quality packages for partners across the South East. I was asked to talk about our initial findings at the #LDRSconf24 and below is a video that formed part of my presentation, produced by the brilliant Rhodri Andrews. A big thank you to Jason Gibbins and colleagues for their support throughout the pilot. More details on the wider service is available here - https://lnkd.in/eviDEHhA

Great to be with Ricardo Gonçalves on Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia yesterday, discussing persistent trade shortages as demand for new homes accelerates. The Housing Industry Association (HIA) Trades Availability Index revealed that all capital city and regional markets are experiencing a consequential shortfall in skilled trades. The new home building industry is in stiff competition for workers with a large Commonwealth Government-funded engineering construction project pipeline, which was around $68b as of the the June quarter. Certain skilled trade persons are flexible across construction sectors, and a significant proportion of those trade persons are now engaged in the public sector infrastructure pipeline. Meanwhile, as new home building market confidence returns and owner-occupiers and investors increasingly re-enter the market; there’s been an acceleration in demand particularly in Perth, Southeast Queensland and Adelaide. To enable the level of home building required to meet the Housing Accord’s target without creating acute labour shortages, HIA conservatively estimates that the trades workforce in residential building would need to increase by at least 30%, or more than 83,000 additional trades workers. Creating training opportunities for Australian residents should be the preferred workforce development strategy for policymakers. But the scale of the shortfall of workers means a timelier strategy must also be employed – the fast-tracking visas for in-demand trades.
