£300,000,000,000 each year in England 😕 💸 A shocking, saddening, insightful yet frustrating report from Centre for Mental Health. It highlights not only the scale of the issues around mental health and wellbeing, but also the pressing need for more prevention, easier access to treatment and support, less stigma, and more informed conversations around mental health. Its our belief that everyone should have access to the support they need to sustain their wellbeing. It's been neglected and under prioritised for years, with average wait times for mental health support over 3 months with the NHS and 6 weeks with large EAP providers. The stats around its impact on both businesses and personal lives are frightening - it's clear that something's not working. People need access to better support, faster to sustain positive mental health and wellbeing. There is no silver bullet, we're making a positive impact for those we work with and hope that our preventative approach becomes more widely implemented, and becomes a contributing factor to this number reducing, in the coming years. "Workplaces should prioritise mental health all year round - not just after traumatic events. "The 10th of October marks #WorldMentalHealthDay, a World Health Organization initiative to promote actions to protect mental health in the workplace. "This year, the day lands three months on from the riots in the UK where tensions in many communities were highlighted and worryingly pronounced. A survey by The London Community Foundation in the wake of the violence found 80% of community organisations reported that their community had increased concerns about safety and mental health since the riots. "In the following weeks, employers were encouraged to think about the mental health of their employees and what support they can offer, with people encouraged to come forward and talk about their feelings and fears. But as is so often the case, this was reactive and in the moment. "We need to not just talk about good mental health but proactively promote it and not just react to worrying, stressful or traumatic events when they arise." For October's Impress Insights newsletter, CORDELLA BART-STEWART OBE details why many companies still need to change their approach to mental health in the workplace. 3 facts you may not know about men's mental health: 👤 Despite experiencing anxiety and depression, less than half of men with these conditions seek treatment (source: ADAA). 👤 Over 6 million men in the U.S. suffer from depression annually, yet it is frequently underdiagnosed (source: ADAA). 👤 Men aged 45-49 have the highest suicide rate in the UK, more than any other age group or gender (source: Samaritans). Understanding and addressing mental health in the workplace is essential for creating a supportive and productive environment. This #MensHealthWeek, let’s raise awareness, encourage open conversations, and empower men to prioritize their mental and physical well-being. Raising awareness about these challenges is crucial for building a more compassionate workplace, and encouraging a culture where employees feel safe to discuss their mental health can help reduce stigma and support those who need it most. Is it the same old mental health emergency in the workplace? Since the pandemic, there’s been a shift to a sense of urgency, and unravelling, a pandoras box where the dust is trying to settle in a new inclusive and informed way, but currently feels like a sandstorm. It feels more like an emergency because people are finally saying that they are not okay. With increased awareness and media campaigns, knowledge gaps are highlighted. We grasp at the latest webinars, thinking we can cram-revise for an upcoming wellbeing exam that will expose our stress-fuelled-cultures. Here's the good news (we need it). I have absolutely nothing new to tell you. I cannot give you a magic three-step-cure. It’s hard, it’s messy and complicated – but we have all the resources we need. Back in 2018 I did a consultancy project on an audit of workplace mental health resources. Since then, my inbox has been filling up with more toolboxes and toolkits. I've written a blog on my ten need-to-knows when facing the 'mental health emergency'. Let me know what links I've missed. #MentalHealth #MentalHealthFirstAid #HumanResources https://lnkd.in/emMVcJG9
