SOC ANALYST EXPECTATIONS: This is a continuation of a series of posts for future SOC Analyst interviewees. Good luck on your career quest! SOC ANALYST EXPECTATION #2: Moving down the TCP/IP stack (OSI model), be able to convey what lives at the transport layer. At this layer, each of the applications (a handful we reviewed in my previous post) will select one of two transport protocols - either UDP or TCP. The selection is built into the application protocol. What is the difference between UDP and TCP? Understand which of the applications we discussed in the previous post typically leverage UDP and which typically leverage TCP. Before you come to the interview, taste and smell TCP and UDP via wireshark - review what a TCP header looks like compared to a UDP header. Before an app that leverages TCP begins to send its chunked payload, what must happen to establish connectivity? Is there a comparable connectivity sequence with UDP? Why or why not? Which security infrastructure typically logs inbound, outbound, and lateral TCP/UDP connections for inspection by SOC Analysts? A threat actor will leave traces of UDP and TCP sessions at what various stages of MITRE? Describe at least two. How might we block these sessions? TCP/UDP covers about 5 minutes of the interview. Newbies will have a conceptual knowledge of the topic while experienced SOC Analyst should convey specific instances where they hunted, tracked, and mitigated malicious sessions. Stay tuned for EXPECTATION #3.

Recruiter: "Got a 'secops' position. My customer VOV in Ghent, has 3000 servers, 9000 workstations, 4000 network devices... 50 production lines... //...// Active Directory FortiAnalyser Nessus, SentinelOne, Microsoft Powershell SQL server Darktrace, FortiNet Hyper-V //..//" (BTW No secrets, this info is public....on another site.) Hacker: footprint, yihaa! While it's not the worse example yet, this is perfect example why #informationsecurity in #humanresources and #recruiting really matters. #cisofail #hrsecurity #ISO27001 Hint: keep the terms and numbers in job description general, don't put details, no products. Side note: This type of job already existed 25 years ago ... without the fancy "secops" or "cyber". Just "system engineer". Still the same job. Been there, done that, I'm flagged by the keyword search... But I fail one requirement: 2 years experience, got >25. And sadly enough, one thing did not change: the recruiter - not able to provide the essential information in first contact - beating about the bush - not able to cut the crap... Dear recruiter, why is it so difficult to have a clear, transparent and trustworthy conversation with the prospect candidate from the start? #securitybyobscurity #opportuntitybyobscurity
