Here are five invaluable lessons I brought back from the mountains: 𝟭. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴: Just like trekking, successful events require meticulous planning. Know your route, anticipate challenges, and equip yourself with the right tools. 𝟮. 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱: Nature, like events, is unpredictable. Flexibility and quick thinking are key to overcoming obstacles and turning surprises into opportunities. 𝟯. 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸: On the trail, every team member plays a crucial role. In events, a cohesive team ensures flawless execution and memorable experiences. 𝟰. 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳: It's a marathon, not a sprint. In both trekking and event management, steady progress and endurance are essential to reach the summit. 𝟱. 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘄: After the climb, take a moment to appreciate the journey. In event management, reflecting on a job well done is as important as the event itself. Spent yesterday at our Costain Group PLC Leadership Conference, discussing our Business Plan and catching up with colleagues. It's great to hear about our ambition and commitment. Steve Williams OBE came to talk to us about how he became a double Olympic Gold Medallist 🥇🥇 in the men's coxless four - which was awesome. So much inspiration I filled a couple of pages with notes, but particular highlights for me: 💪 Coordination: If you're in sync with your team mates, just only need to pull your own weight and 25% of the boat. If you're out of sync - you're pulling everyone's weight and the whole boat. That's not going to win you the race. 👌 How are you feeling? Really know how your teammates are - and make sure they know how you are. As you are in it together. ⏱ Own your stopwatch: On an Olympic journey, you know exactly how fast you need to be at every step (every 500m actually) of the 4 year cycle, if you want to collect your gold. Know where you are - you're either fast enough, or not fast enough. Learn, then try again. 🍳 Second breakfast: Fuel yourself properly - and take the opportunity to sit round a different "camp fire" to learn from other people in the squad.
