The article "How Ukraine Became a World War" explores the expanding global implications of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Initially, non-European countries focused on managing the war's effects, seeking economic opportunities, or offering mediation. However, as the conflict persists, these nations become more directly involved. The authors argue that this increased involvement transforms Europe into an object of non-European foreign policy. However, the authors assume that non-European involvement is primarily opportunistic, potentially overlooking deeper geopolitical motivations. The authors fail to situate the crisis within the larger socio-historical context and the emergence of a contested multicentric-multipolar global order. The war in Ukraine was bound to become more complex and intricate over time if not resolved early. There were opportunities for a diplomatic resolution, but many key stakeholders opted out, leading to the current protracted and internationalized conflict. https://lnkd.in/e4zGAfSC #GlobalConflict #GeopoliticalShift #WarEvolution

Bridging Divides: China and Brazil's Peace Proposal for Russia-Ukraine Conflict "China and Brazil Call for Inclusive Peace Talks to Resolve Russia-Ukraine Conflict" In May, China and Brazil stepped forward with a hopeful peace plan for Russia and Ukraine. Their vision? An international peace conference that includes both nations, fostering genuine dialogue and fair consideration of all proposals. This stands in stark contrast to the NATO-backed summit in Switzerland from June 15–16, where Russia was notably absent and real negotiations were missing from the agenda. https://lnkd.in/dpE5Ub42

The geopolitical complexities of the Russia-Ukraine conflict have highlighted the varied responses of global powers, particularly China and India. Both nations, though differing in approach, navigate the balance between strategic alliances and the conflict’s implications for global order. China, under President Xi Jinping, seeks to mediate with a peace initiative that, while neutral, aligns with Russian interests. This manoeuvre reflects China’s ‘dual use objectives’ of asserting global influence and safeguarding its strategic partnership with Moscow. The 10th Med Dialogues conference begins today in Rome, following a meeting of the Mediterranean Yearbook Advisory Council in Barcelona last week. Unfortunately, I missed both, having just returned to Tunis from New York. I should first apologize to ISPI - Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale and the European Institute of the Mediterranean. And since I have received some worried messages from friends, I should add that I am not boycotting, not being canceled, and not being barred from attending :) Nevertheless, these meetings seem to be the end of an era. In the last two years, several Track II meetings have been cancelled, whether in the Middle East or in the former Soviet space. Trumpism - that combination of patriotism, xenophobia, anti-elite sentiment, uninhibited deal making, and authoritarian populism - is a global phenomenon. An iron curtain is falling across the continents. The allegory of the coming winter is no longer original. But I landed in New York City in spring-like weather. Then it poured. And when I left, it was finally winter. That's the state of the world from the end of World War II to the era of social media and artificial intelligence. It should be clear by now that the road to 2030 will be difficult. Some of us will fall, others will give up, but a few will carry on. Peace over thousands of innocent deaths will not be acceptable, only temporary. Stability over democracy is a centuries-old dilemma, but it is only one segment of a cycle. What seems impossible today was possible yesterday, and vice versa. Prepare for the worst, plant for a better future. #Med2024
“The Red Sea crisis and the Russian invasion of Ukraine have shown how crucial economic integration with North Africa is for the countries of the Mediterranean region in order to absorb economic shocks today.” Paolo Magri, Managing Director and President Advisory Board, Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI) #MED2024
