More than 1.3 million individuals work as first responders across the United States, selflessly dedicating their lives to protecting and serving their communities. But, at the heart of every emergency call, before any fire truck, ambulance, or patrol car arrives, it’s a 9-1-1 dispatcher who takes the call, providing calm amidst crisis and getting help enroute. These heroes are the unseen yet essential backbone of public safety. Today, let’s honor not just those on the frontlines but those behind the scenes the first, first responders and all who serve. The challenge of responding safely and more efficiently for emergency services is global. However, the technology, data, and services already exist to make improvements. We should focus on improving the lives of our providers so they can deal with the stressful situations they experience by… *checks notes* … advocating against a law that requires organizations to provide sick leave for their employees. For anyone unaware, the Earned Sick Time Act states that employers need to offer at least 72 hours a year of sick time to employees. For a 12 hour EMS professional on a 36/48 schedule that comes out to ~1.5 pay periods of sick time. For a 24 hour EMS professional on either a 48 or 52 hour work week it comes out to 3 shifts a year. Maybe this is why we have a retention problem in EMS

If you are unsure of your location our dispatchers have multiple tools to help locate you quickly thanks to WPH2 & RapidSOS. 2️⃣ After confirming your location, our dispatchers will ask for your name & phone number, then inquire about the emergency. 3️⃣ Be clear & concise about your emergency. 4️⃣ Dispatchers may ask follow-up questions, but rest assured, it won't delay emergency responders. 5️⃣ Our goal: to dispatch calls within 62 seconds of answering, aligning with NENA standards (National Emergency Number Association). Imagine facing an emergency without clear roads or operational utilities—public works ensures communities stay functional and resilient. Today, more states are recognizing public works as vital first responders. In 2003, President George W. Bush issued a directive classifying public works as part of emergency response, and since then, states like Mississippi and New Hampshire have enacted laws to officially acknowledge this essential role. Yet, public works remains one of the “silent arms of public safety,” often overlooked despite their critical support to other first responders in crisis recovery efforts. These shared experiences prepare us for more than just successful events, they lay the foundation for resilience when disasters happen. When relationships and communication are already strong, teams can act with confidence and unity during critical incidents.
