People are asking me about #ImpactProducing to build community engagement for film and media projects. Yes, film and media can tell important #SocialImpact stories that connect to hearts, change minds, and drive action. But most filmmakers, funders, and nonprofits are fundamentally disconnected from each other, which can hinder effective social impact storytelling. Success lies in early and collaborative partnerships, not shallow transactions. #FILMMAKERS: ❌ DON'T wait until you need finishing funds or distribution to reach out and cultivate relationships with partners. This is a shallow approach and comes off as desperate. ✅ DO find #philanthropic and #nonprofit partners early on and include them in the development process – financially and conceptually – and include their audiences. #NONPROFITS and #FOUNDATIONS: ❌ DON'T simply contract a film or media project to tell your story. This is also transactional, creates a power imbalance, and likely results in a navel-gazing narrative. ✅ DO talk to film and media makers who have experience with your topic or a specific point of view. Consider becoming a partner or developing a fellowship or grantmaking process to produce these projects. #CREATIVITY and #INNOVATION IN ACTION: The Mycoskie— University of California, Berkeley Psychedelic Documentary Fellowship is doing it right, looking to fund numerous projects in early-stage development.
