We Did It! The Austal Giving #team have completed #theLONGrun 2024, supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and raising money to help make prostate cancer history. Collectively, the team has walked, run or ridden an impressive 2,122.9 kilometres over the month of September - and thanks to our many generous sponsors, we have raised an amazing total of A$23,927.88 – the second highest total of any team in Australia! Congratulations to the Austal Giving team on an incredible result and a fantastic effort; especially Monica Berryman, from Austal Darwin who individually raised $16,043.10 - and Jeremy Griffiths and Mostyn McNeill who both clicked over 300km, individually. Arguably the greatest value we have all gained from #theLONGrun is the raised awareness of Prostate Cancer, it’s impact on our families and friends, and how we can help. Did you know; ·        Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia. ·        Prostate cancer is the second most common cause of death from cancer in Australian men. ·        72 Australian men are diagnosed with Prostate Cancer each day, and more than 10 men will die, each day, from the disease. ·        Your risk of prostate cancer increases as you get older. ·        If your father or brother have been diagnosed, your risk doubles ·        If 2 or more close family members have been diagnosed, your risk increases five-fold. ·        If you have family history of breast or ovarian cancer, and/or BRCA1 or 2 genes, your risk is also greater. ·        Prostate Cancer often has no symptoms at its earliest stages. As it grows, symptoms include difficulty or pain when urinating, pain in the hips or lower back, or blood in your urine.   If you’re a man over 50, ask your GP for a ‘PSA test’ annually. If you have family history, start testing annually from the age of 40. It’s not scary, it’s a simple blood test that takes 30 seconds! Our final AmpliFriday post for 2024 was unique. Typically, our amplified individuals select a charity, and we donate $100 on their behalf; however, as we all know, sometimes making decisions feels burdensome. Therefore, in honour of a beloved young father who is our neighbour and an integral part of his family, our team chose the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). Aleece Laird, the CEO of Amplify Consulting Inc., which manages AmpliFriday, emphasizes the importance of promoting gentleness and kindness, stating, "Our donation today is an effort to spread these values in the world. Whether or not we notice it, kindness creates a positive impact that has a ripple effect." The CCS was officially formed in 1938 after the country’s first cancer committee responded to growing concern by doctors that people were not aware of the signs of cancer. Since 1947, CCS has invested more than $2 billion in cancer research. Donations are also used to provide a support system for all those affected by cancer and shape healthy public policies to prevent cancer and support those living with the disease. CCS reports that “about 64% of Canadians diagnosed with cancer will survive at least 5 years after their diagnosis, up from 55% in the early 1990s. In the 1940s, survival was about 25%. For some cancers, like thyroid and testicular, the survival rates are more than 95%.” We dedicate this AmpliFriday to all those whose lives have been touched by cancer by making a $100 donation to the Canadian Cancer Society in their honour.

I’m reaching out 1 last time as I get ready to ride PMC 2024 the first weekend in August (next Saturday) to raise funds for cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. I'm Running for Mum and for Everyone Fighting Breast Cancer 🩷 On May 10, 2025, I’ll be running the RunThrough Battersea Park Half Marathon to raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, in support of Breast Cancer Now - a charity dedicated to funding life-saving research and supporting those affected. In December 2022, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then, she’s been undergoing a long and difficult treatment journey, which even required her to travel abroad to access life-saving care. While we’re optimistic about her progress, the experience has highlighted how much more needs to be done to make treatments accessible and ensure no one has to leave their home and family for care. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with 1 in 7 women diagnosed in their lifetime. Every year, around 55,000 people hear the life-changing words, “You have breast cancer.” While survival rates are improving, the journey through treatment remains incredibly tough. That’s why I’m taking on this half marathon—to honor my mum’s strength and resilience and to raise money for a cause that saves lives. I’ll be honest: I’m not a runner (hence why it’s a half marathon and not the full one), but the challenge feels minuscule compared to what people with breast cancer face every single day. #WorldPancreaticCancerDay I started working with @pancreaticcanuk at the end of 2017. Previously, I’d never heard of this horrendous cancer. It had been eye-opening, an education, and a pleasure to work with the team & the supporters. It is a brutal disease and gets nowhere near enough awareness, eduction, or the funding that it needs/deserves. 1. Pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate among all major cancers. 2. In nearly every country, pancreatic cancer is the only major cancer with a single-digit five-year survival rate (2-9 percent). 3. Every day, more than 1,250 people worldwide will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and an estimated 1,180 will die from the disease. 💜 Please educate yourself on the symptoms, and share. Listen to your body, act quickly I’ve lost both parents to cancer, please don’t ignore what is showing up in your body. I’ve seen what a lack of action and misdiagnosis can do. If it doesn’t feel right, it’s not. It can save your life 💜 2025 is massive for the charity, the impact of what they are looking to do is game changing. It’s hard to believe that today marks two years since I lost my husband, Chris, to prostate cancer at the early age of 56. He was a healthy man—an avid runner, careful with his diet, and always took good care of himself. Despite doing everything right, he didn’t get screened in time. Just three years before, we had lost Chris’ father to prostate cancer as well. We were unaware of the hereditary risk factors, which unfortunately led to a lack of early testing. One blood test and the words ‘YOU HAVE PROSTATE CANCER’ changed our world. Chris’ cancer was aggressive, and we ran out of treatment options six months into his cancer journey, forcing us to seek treatment abroad. This experience underscored the need for more research and better treatment options within our own country. Additional awareness, education and research is required, and I am committed to fighting until we find a cure. In honoring Chris’ memory, I am again raising funds for ZERO Prostate Cancer, an organization that has provided me with immense support and a platform to fight against this disease, ensuring that no other family has to endure the pain of losing a loved one to prostate cancer. What is colorectal cancer? Colorectal cancer is the third most diagnosed type of cancer in men and women and is the second leading overall cause of cancer deaths.  It is 35%-40% more common in men than in women.  More than 41,500 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer in the UK every year, that's roughly 1 person every 15 minutes.  16,000 people die every year from this cancer.  Yet bowel cancer is Preventable, Treatable and Curable.  9 out of 10 people diagnosed will survive if it is caught early enough.So what are the symptoms?Bleeding from your bottom.  Blood in your stool.  A change on how often you go to the toilet, including diarrhoea and constipation.Losing weight without trying.  Feeling more tired and lethargic than normal.  A pain or lump in your tummy.  If you notice any of these signs you should make an appointment with your GP.It's better to be safe than sorry.  This September I'm going to be walking 43+ miles with my furry baby Jewel to raise money for Bowel Cancer UK.
