As Canadian leaders in sports and recreation design, CS&P is thrilled to be involved in the discussion of the IAKS' Canada Group. Join us November 22 for "Letting go of the old: A new future for recreation facilities", a webinar hosted by IAKS Canada that will dive into innovative opportunities we can reimagine sports facilities for the future. As the idea of recreation expands beyond traditional competitive pursuits, the way we design these facilities needs to shift in turn to accommodate a broader range of participation and physical activity. In this webinar, Development Consultant Ola Mattsson from LOA fonden (Danish Foundation for Culture and Sport - Facilities Team Sports) will explore how the foundation is reimagining its leisure facilities to address the needs of modern society. Sharing learnings from Denmark, he will discuss an innovative approach to shift away from the competitive sports design of the past, and embrace new models that prioritize inclusivity and reflect the varied ways people engage in recreation today. Is the financial viability of hosting the Olympics sustainable, considering the rising costs, frequent budget overruns, and both immediate and extended economic effects? Economic Stimulus: Large-scale events like the Olympics often boost the local economy through job creation in sectors like construction, hospitality, and retail, and by attracting global tourism Also provides infrastructure upgrades, including transportation systems and sporting facilities.... International Exposure: The global attention drawn by the Olympics can enhance the host city's international profile, potentially boosting tourism and investment long after the games have concluded. It also showcases local culture and history to a worldwide audience, fostering a sense of pride and community Does that justify the below risks..... High Costs: The financial burden of hosting the Olympics can be immense, often running into billions of euros, and there's always the risk that the costs will outweigh the economic benefits. Post-Olympics, some facilities can become underused or abandoned leading to wasteful investments Impact on Local Businesses: While the Olympics can boost tourism, they can also disrupt local businesses and everyday life due to increased congestion and security protocols, which may deter regular business activities Food for thought....

Of course it's exciting to work on a greenfield project that will have lots of fun stuff, especially one of the magnitude of the $500M+ Winter Sports World. But the satisfaction is in so much more than that. This is the largest new private tourism project in Australia right now. It’s the biggest ever tourism project in Western Sydney, set to almost double visitation to Penrith. But it's even more than that. Australia's first indoor snow resort will create jobs for more than 2700 people who currently travel hours to work. It will inject over $222 million each and every year into the local economy. It will reset sustainability benchmarks for new tourist attractions, place First Nations culture and connection to Country on a global stage and provide valuable social infrastructure for the local community. Yes, there's lots of stories to be told about ski runs, snow angels, ice bars and day spas. But there's so much more meaningful storytelling to share about Winter Sports World, like the role of indoor sport and leisure centres in the age of climate change and their significance in fostering social capital in this era of compound disasters. #contentwriter #wintersportsworld #westernsydney #wsw #newattraction
Managing director at Winter Sports World, Australia's first indoor snow resort - an economic catalyst for Western Sydney
The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and CSIRO update to the groundbreaking 2013 report “The Future of Australian Sport: Megatrends shaping the sport sector over coming decades” was released in December 2022. It contains interesting facts and statistics, observations and predictions relevant to Winter Sports World and our colleagues in the indoor sporting and leisure attractions industry. The report outlines a growing focus on sustainability. Winter Sports World ticks that box. In his foreword, ASC CEO Kieren Perkins OAM talks about promoting and supporting inclusive and diverse sporting environments. Another tick to us. In fact, indoor leisure and sport centres will play an increasingly important role as climate change and global geopolitics become more volatile. Climate change will hugely impact sports as average global temperatures and days of increased exposure to UV radiation spike and extreme weather events and their effects increase. It will impact snow and weather conditions and quality; sporting infrastructure; and athlete health. We’ll start to see more sporting events disrupted or cancelled by climate, and athlete performance impacted. There was a 10 per cent decline in annual maximum snow depth between 1962 and 2022, accelerating to 15 per cent between 2001–2010. We can expect snow coverage to retreat further. Some lower-level resorts may not even receive natural snowfalls by 2050. The solution to these challenges is to relocate training, events and play indoors where weather and conditions are regulated and consistent. As this ASC/CSIRO report states, “sharing the costs of constructing all-weather facilities in secure sites may also mean pivoting to become more multi-use venues or fields, reducing energy consumption or adopting local renewable energy systems, and following sustainable principles in development and construction”. It recommends building multi-use indoor sports complexes. That’s Winter Sports World. As a greenfield project, we won’t have to retrofit to prepare for these challenges – they’re already in the plans. 📸 David Hill, Deep Hill Media #wintersportsworld #wsw #newattraction #westernsydney #climatechange

🎾As the world’s eye turns to The All England Lawn Tennis Club for its annual tennis spectacular, our amazing staff are once again playing a crucial behind-the-scenes role in ensuring the Wimbledon Championships run smoothly. From parking management to waste collection, trading standards and environmental health, parks, leisure, heritage and communications, our dedicated teams are serving up excellence. #ProudofMerton 💜💚 Parking: Our parking team implements special traffic measures to manage the influx of half a million visitors to the borough, ensuring smooth flow around the area. Waste management: The waste and street environment team work closely with Veolia, the council’s waste management contractor, to keep the surrounding areas clean and tidy. Over the fortnight up to 16 tonnes of rubbish is collected – that’s the weight of more than four Centre Court roofs (both fixed and moving parts) combined! Environmental health: The team conduct food safety inspections to ensure people can enjoy their strawberries and cream and glasses of Pimm’s safely. They carry out samples on a dizzying array of food, from sandwiches to burgers and chips to sushi. Trading standards: The trading standards team work with the police to crack down on fake goods sellers. They work hard to make sure visitors are not being ripped off - whether that is being over-charged for drinks or getting less than they thought in their glass. Greenspaces: Our greenspaces team work tirelessly to maintain our 47 tennis courts across the borough, whilst managing our £1m tennis court upgrade programme. Sport and leisure: Our sport and leisure team work in partnership with AELTC, idverde (grounds maintenance contractor) to organise two of the borough’s big screens. The two screens at Morden Park and Canons House show the Championships action each day from the start of play until the parks close, with deckchairs, picnic areas and food and drink available to buy. Heritage: Tennis is a huge part of Merton’s history, and where better to explore it than the council’s dedicated heritage photo archive? Our Heritage Service provides photos and information so residents and visitors can explore how the game has been part of Merton’s community since 1877, up to today as we become London’s #BoroughOfSport. Communications: Our talented communication’s team is on a mission to promote the great sporting opportunities in our borough during the two-week event. Being a #BoroughofSport means that every person in our borough has the opportunity to embrace sport and their chosen way of moving more. Because we believe in the power of sport to connect, inspire and transform our borough.

CHA-CHING!!! As of this morning, outdoor recreation is valued at $1.2 TRILLION, contributing 2.3% of U.S. GDP and 5 million jobs. This is the largest recorded measure since 2012, when the BEA started calculating the size of the outdoor recreation economy. These numbers are why it’s more important than ever that Congress prioritize sound policy that would expand access to the outdoors and protect America’s public lands. This includes passing the EXPLORE Act before year's end, and securing adequate funding for our land management agencies, like the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service. Join us in asking Congress to pass these important recreation policies to ensure that outdoor recreation remains sustainable: https://lnkd.in/gPttjX3B
BREAKING NEWS! The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) just released new data on the economic impact of outdoor recreation and found that it is responsible for more than $1.2 trillion in economic output, 2.3% of U.S. GDP, and 5 million jobs. Outdoor recreation is one of the main ways Americans come to know their public lands and waters and develop a stewardship ethic. With outdoor participation growing, it is even more important that Congress prioritize sound policy that would improve access, create more trails, and protect the outdoors. Outdoor Alliance and its partners have been working for years to develop and pass a package of recreation policy to improve outdoor recreation on public lands and waters. The EXPLORE Act would ensure that outdoor recreation remains sustainable, while also promoting equitable access, and addressing the demand on America’s public lands and waters. Funding secured for key Brisbane Olympics venues Exciting progress for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games as the Federal and Queensland Governments finalise a Federation Funding Agreement (FFA). The agreement covers the first five Minor Venues Program (MVP) projects, including the new Chandler Indoor Sports Centre and Precinct, upgrades to the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, Sunshine Coast Stadium, Sunshine Coast Mountain Bike Centre, and the new Sunshine Coast Indoor Sports Centre. An investment set to deliver accessible and inclusive sporting facilities, they'll benefit the community long after the Games. Key priorities include sustainability, increased participation of women and First Nations people, and opportunities for trainees and apprentices. The collaboration between both governments aims to ensure these venues meet community needs and are fully prepared for the 2032 Games. Such significant investments in infrastructure not only support major events but also create lasting benefits for the community. It's a prime example of how strategic investment can drive both immediate and long-term positive impacts. As a proud Brisbane-founded company, we are looking forward to collaborating with our valued infrastructure and energy partners over the next few years to help deliver world-classs projects to bring Brisbane 2032 to life! #Brisbane2032 #Olympics #InfrastructureInvestment #CommunityLegacy #Concentis #FutureReady

1moI truly sympathise with the idea to focus less on results and more on the fun, as it is also in the spirit of the convention of the rights of the child. However I can not take any credit for the Danish succes but I am happy to pass it on to my danish doppelganger Ola Mattsson ;-). Best of luck!
