'#Sustainable #Geotechnics for Transport Infrastructure' was the title of a recent workshop held in Portugal, hosted by the IGS's TC-Stabilization and the ISSMGE's TC-Transportation Geotechnics (TC202). The workshop addressed fundamental issues such as sustainable materials and construction processes for #transportation #infrastructure, as well as geotechnical challenges and innovations aimed at enhancing resilience and adaptability of transport assets, infrastructure, routes, networks, and systems. Presentations on the environmental advantages of using #geosynthetics in transport projects were shared by notable IGS experts Erol Tutumluer, Jorge Zornberg and Xuecheng Bian. The paper “Turbulent Flow Field and Scour Characteristics around Bridge Pier in Combined Wave and Current Conditions” is authored by Gaurav Misuriya, Eldho T.I., and B. S. Mazumder. The AGS is pleased to announce Andrew Bond (Director at Geocentrix Ltd) will be presenting at the We Need to Talk About Groundwater Conference, which is taking place on 6th November 2024 at ETC. Venues, Manchester. Andrew will be presenting on Groundwater Pressures in the Second-Generation Eurocodes. This presentation will explain how groundwater pressures are determined in the second-generation Eurocodes, starting from the definition of a water action in EN 1990 Basis of structural and geotechnical design and proceeding to simplify the specification for the particular circumstances in which such actions arise in the ground. Techniques for analysing large data sets of groundwater levels will be presented as well as simpler methods for more commonly-encountered sparse data sets. Real-world examples will illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of these methods. Tickets are priced at £150 for AGS members and £210 for non-members. All prices exclude VAT.
