According to US News, Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the best graduate schools in America. I agree 😊 . Check out new top rankings in engineering: #5 overall, #1 in biomedical and industrial, and top 10 across the board. But also business, science, computing, social sciences... whatever you want to study, we have you covered!!! (As always, please note that rankings are very rough metrics of quality, based on varying criteria as defined by specific media groups... before choosing where to go to school, you need to do your own research and decide based on your own criteria!) https://lnkd.in/evDsQ77J

On top of those mentioned, such as #EDI, #AI, staff- student relations, #impacts, I would add #sustainableresearch as a hot topic for #PGRs, with more and more computing and digital tools used in a variety of disciplines (not only STEM), doing research sustainably is critical and part of the impacts of a PGR project #ukcgeac
Professor Doug Cleaver and Elizabeth Halton chair our final session for today on hot topics in postgraduate education and research. #UKCGEAC

Our 2nd webinar of this season was on the University of Austin (UATX) with Pano Kanelos. UATX is an experimental university in the truest sense of the word: the institution testing a new approach with the goal to become an example, the North Star, for others (hence Polaris on the logo). We will be following UATX to see if its innovations spread. My takeaways after the discussion: 1. Universities are places "where we do our thinking". Amen. 2. "Politics should be studied at the university, not be the operating system." In 1967, the University of Chicago issued the Kalven Report, arguing for universities' political neutrality "out of respect for free inquiry and the obligation to cherish a diversity of viewpoints". Perhaps, this is the standard the academia should strive for. Perhaps, not. What do you think? 3. Talking about diversity of viewpoints, UATX seeks intellectual pluralism, which they define not as diverse opinions held strongly, but rather as any opinions held lightly and ready to be updated if presented with new facts/arguments. 4. Just like countries, universities should have 3 branches of governance: legislative (the Board), executive (the management team), and judicial (the adjudicative panel analyzing cases of potential misconduct). 5. Conceptually, academic freedom is secondary to the academic obligation to seek the truth (this one is a part of Isak Frumin's reflection on the conversation). The pursuit of the truth can also be called, in the words of Pano Kanelos, "practical prudence", the phrase I plan to shamelessly steal and overuse. Godspeed to UATX which has welcomed its first cohort of Bachelor's students this fall, and we hope to see you all at the next #InnovativeUniversities Webinar on Thursday, October 10. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) announced it will eliminate tuition next fall for undergraduate students from families earning under $200,000 annually, as part of efforts to improve access to higher education. Additionally, students from families earning below $100,000 will receive full coverage for housing, dining, fees, and allowances for books and personal expenses. MIT, a leading private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, ranks among the world’s top institutions. For the 2024-2025 academic year, tuition is approximately $62,000, with total annual costs, including housing and fees, nearing $86,000. This initiative aims to ease financial barriers for students and their families. Source: "M.I.T. to Offer Free Tuition to Families Earning Less Than $200,000," The New York Times, by Alexandra E.
