On Monday our CEO Stew Edmondson attended a Labour Party Conference Fringe Event with Chi Onwurah and Samantha Niblett MP, hosted by TechWorks and Palace Yard, which focused on how we can secure the UK Semiconductor Industry. A key message from all of the industry participants was about the vital importance of access to talent to support their growth plans. We advocate that the only sustainable solution to the overall skills shortage is to invest in the skills pipeline right from primary school. Tackling the shortage means a national-level, long-term programme to incentivise more young people to pursue the study of Electronics and semiconductors. Another point made in the discussion was about gender imbalance in our sector. Through our successful “Girls into Electronics” programme, we are starting to see increased interest and engagement. Overall, through our programmes, more than 100 employers are demonstrating their commitment to supporting young people to develop the skills that the industry needs. With continued support from industry and government leadership, we can work together to tackle the skills challenge.
Thank you to Charles Sturman and TechWorks for bringing together a wonderful roundtable lunch at Labour Party conference on Securing the UK Semiconductor Industry - and a special thanks to Chi Onwurah MP, the newly-elected chair of the influential Science, Innovation and Technology select committee and Samantha Niblett MP, newly-elected Member of Parliament for South Derbyshire for your time and engagement. We were also lucky to be joined by some of the leading players in the UK semiconductor world bringing their perspectives and challenges - but most of all, explaining why semiconductors are so vital not just in achieving net zero, the space race and, frankly, all technological progress from smart phones, to quantum and AI. Semiconductors make everything happen. Thank you all those for coming and sorry for those of you stuck on flooded motorways and trains. We'll follow up with something in London! FuzeHub and Upstate Makes are attending the 2024 Semicon West conference in San Francisco to help spread the good word about all the cutting-edge innovation happening all across the Empire State. The name of the game is collaboration, with so many different tech companies, economic development organizations, research and testing operations, and all who participate in making the global electronics supply chain stronger all on display and engaging in robust conversations. Our state has a story to tell, and thanks to the hard work of the New York State Economic Development Council (NYSEDC) and Empire State Development, New York is (once again) in a prominent location at the premier show for the semiconductor industry. #AdvancedMaterials #AdvancedManufacturing #SupplyChain

The future is always evolving – and so are we 🙌 Our research and development (R&D) team around the world is helping to solve the technical, economic, and social challenges facing the world today. 🥳 So, it just makes sense to invest in the future by expanding our R&D department. And that is exactly what we will be doing in Ireland over the next four years at our sites in Cork and Dublin. To mark the occasion, the Deputy Prime Minister of Ireland, Micheál Martin, paid us a visit this week and shared his thoughts on the expansion: "This announcement underscores Ireland's reputation as a global hub for innovation and technology and will have a positive impact on the communities of Dublin and Cork". Martin O'Keeffe, Managing Director of Infineon Technologies Semiconductor Ireland emphasizes the advantages of Ireland: "Ireland's vibrant engineering ecosystem enables us to be a center of excellence for innovation and R&D for the company". 🌎 The Infineon research teams in Ireland are focused on IP development for the automotive and consumer markets. With the expansion, we will support the development of new technologies and products that will help drive #digitalization and #decarbonization on a global scale. #Infineon #reseachanddevelopment #innovation

It's interesting to see the US government promoting domestic chip development while discriminating against certain local entities like Applied Materials. This dual approach raises questions about the actual aim of these initiatives. #SemiconductorIndustry #CHIPSAct #USPolicy

Today, we’re proud to celebrate two years since the groundbreaking CHIPS and Science Act was enacted into law. The act provided $52 billion in funding and incentives to strengthen U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and R&D. It also resulted in the creation of Natcast, the operator of the National Semiconductor Technology Center (“NSTC”). This pivotal legislation represents a once-in-a generation opportunity for the U.S. to drive the pace of innovation, set standards, and strengthen our global leadership in semiconductor design and manufacturing, which is critical to our country’s national security and economic prosperity. As we commemorate the incredible progress the CHIPS Act has enabled over the past two years, we remain committed to advancing disruptive technological breakthroughs and building a sustainable semiconductor workforce development ecosystem through collaboration and a shared commitment to American-led innovation.
