For the record, I've always been a fan of collaboration! Cross-functional collaboration is the ultimate team sport, and it's vital for corporate growth, especially today as technology and AI create new revenue streams and business models. These innovations require significant effort to lift off the ground. A recent Gartner survey of over 400 business leaders found that most companies are juggling up to five complex initiatives at once. For example, an organization might be designing cross-channel customer experiences, merging sales and marketing functions, and developing new digital growth strategies. Each of these programs can involve five to eight corporate functions and 20 to 35 team members. The research also shows that 78% of organizational leaders experience what is called "collaboration drag" — too many meetings, excessive peer feedback, unclear decision-making authority, and too much time spent getting buy-in from stakeholders. When collaboration drag is high, businesses are 37% less likely to exceed their revenue and profit targets, failing to achieve the goals of their cross-functional agendas. Has the "collaboration drag" reached epidemic levels? While not all collaboration projects succeed, meaningful and engaging conversations have profoundly shaped my professional journey.
