🚀⭐ I had a fantastic experience this past weekend at Protothon 2024, a UX hackathon hosted by DubsTech. Huge shoutout to my incredible team members Basavaraj Hittinahalli, Holly Haymaker, and Andrea Maiato for their dedication throughout the hackathon. It was an exhilarating weekend filled with creative brainstorming, seamless teamwork, and strategic UX planning of crafting user flows, wireframes, and prototypes, culminating in a final presentation to the judges. Our task was to develop a platform tailored to the needs of the Seattle Fire Department, empowering them to: 🔥 Swiftly identify incidents 🚑 Efficiently allocate resources 📝 Generate detailed reports post-incident Our solution—Seatle Fire, an intelligent emergency response system designed to optimize resource allocation and enhance efficiency during crises by leveraging advanced data analytics and real-time monitoring. It was an enriching experience while forging new connections! 🚒🚀⭐ @DubsTech @design buddies @Zoshua Colah #UX #UI #UIUX #haxkathon #Prorothon #userexperience #userinterface #uidesign #uxdesigner #design #userresearch #uxprocess #interactiondesign

I recently had an amazing opportunity to speak to Skip Shelly's students at CMU's #MHCI program about my journey from being a Design student to an industry professional. This made me reflect on some topics that I covered with these wonderful students would have helped me the most if I were back in their shoes. > Students want to know the "secret key" to standing out as job candidates, but this concept can be overwhelming. Demystify what "standing out" truly means. Favorable candidates are confident in speaking about who they are as individuals: what their strengths and weaknesses are as Designers, what their journey to Design is, and their goals are! Spend time having your students reflect on these topics and know their journey like the back of their hand. Through intentional introspection (and practice speaking about themselves) students can have an easier time leaning into their narrative in their portfolios and in their interviews. > Students want the "how" more than they want to know the "why,” which is understandable but should be addressed. It makes sense that students want to get things done as efficiently as possible, especially when preparing for this job market. There are templates for portfolios, case studies, cover letters, and resumes everywhere, but they will not be helpful if your students don't understand what makes it good and why. Talk through models that will help students see patterns of what makes a good [insert job hunting element here]. > Remind students that industry connections online are assets that they shouldn’t take for granted. LinkedIn was the networking and job hunting tool that got me all the opportunities I have today. Show students how to write cold messages, how to ask for guidance/a portfolio review, what good introductions look like, and the power of a follow-up. Instill in them that connections with people are what get you far. A huge thanks to Skip for trusting me with this opportunity, and I hope that these points can help any other educators out there which students in the same boat.
Yesterday our #MHCI students had the privilege of spending some time with Julia Fernandez from Meta who shared her journey from a design student to an industry professional. We are continuously grateful for the practitioners who share their knowledge and time with our students. #UX #careerjourney #MHCI CMU Human-Computer Interaction Institute
