How do you stand out in an interview? When I was first interviewing for associate roles a decade ago, I had 1.5yrs of hardcore sales experience, a college athlete background, big smile, fresh haircuts, pressed suits, “charisma”. Yet I still was receiving rejection after rejection. That’s because those things are cool, but to really stand out more than anything, you have to ask the most detailed and thought-provoking questions. This is more memorable. This translates well into being a device rep. Asking a Dr. questions about their family and interests is a nice thing to do, but they won’t remember you by that. They’ll remember the rep who asked them an incredible question that made them think. There are no shortcuts to creating these questions. You have to study more than anyone else and/or talk to more reps at that company than anyone else. Dont forget to get all your research and questions printed out with an extra copy for anyone you speak to. Good luck!

Ten years ago, I had a dream of breaking into Medical Device Sales, but there was one problem: I didn’t have the clinical experience most companies demanded. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 1,000 𝗿𝗲𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿—yes, over 1,000—companies selling even something as simple as foot cream told me I wasn’t qualified. But I didn’t let that stop me. I kept applying, kept pushing, and eventually landed a role managing a surgical robotics program for Mazor Robotics. Despite having no clinical sales experience, I found myself in hospitals planning surgeries with robots. Here’s what I learned: Experience is valuable, and being qualified is important—but they aren’t everything. Determination, resilience, and a refusal to take 'no' for an answer are truly priceless. If you’re out there thinking you need to be 100% qualified before you even apply—stop. Start focusing on what makes you stand out. Build your unfair advantage, whether it’s relentless drive, a strong personal brand, or a willingness to keep learning and trying no matter how many times you hear 'no.' Sometimes, the most 'qualified' candidates get stuck in their comfort zones. It’s the hungry, determined ones who end up doing the impossible.

Do you aspire to be in Medical Device Sales? You’re most likely going to start as an associate sales rep (ASR) Here are a few rules of the road (in no particular order) Say Yes No Phone (In the OR) Listen Observe Answer Your Phone Don’t Take It Personally Be Proactive Ask Questions Slow Down When Checking Your Sets Stay Calm NEVER Lie To Or BS The Surgeon Becoming a Medical Device Salesperson takes dedication, passion and time. Don’t skip steps. Learn everything possible from your senior sales rep(s) before you’re saddled with a quota. Invest in your own sales education because your company won’t. This job is a marathon…not a sprint. To all my tenured med device reps out there…What am I missing?
