Have you heard about the new focus on CSR in Nigeria? It’s pretty interesting how the national assembly is now seriously gauging the CSR efforts of companies. Gone are the days when companies could just launch one big CSR project and get a pat on the back. Now, they’re expected to actually integrate CSR into their core operations and report on it transparently. Communities are also getting more vocal about their expectations from the companies operating in their areas. Take the recent case involving the Director-General of NIMASA. The House of Representatives received a petition against him, alleging that the agency failed to deliver on its CSR commitments to coastal communities. Instead of launching educational and skills acquisition programs as promised, the DG was accused of building a Maritime Skill Acquisition Centre and a Twin Lecture Theatre in Kaduna State, his home region. This has really ruffled feathers because those coastal communities were counting on NIMASA’s support to improve their livelihoods. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is essential for companies to demonstrate their commitment to ethical practices, sustainability, and social impact. By engaging in CSR initiatives, companies can enhance their reputation, build trust with stakeholders, and contribute to the well-being of society. Some key reasons why companies should prioritize CSR include: 1. Enhancing brand reputation: Consumers are increasingly looking to support companies that are socially responsible. 2. Strengthening relationships with stakeholders: Engaging in CSR initiatives can help companies build strong relationships with customers, investors, and communities. This can lead to increased customer loyalty, investor confidence, and community support. 3 Mitigating risks: Companies that prioritize CSR are better equipped to identify and address potential risks related to environmental, social, and governance issues. By proactively addressing these risks, companies can avoid costly legal disputes, reputational damage, and other negative consequences. At Yellow Stones we are passionate about sustainability and community development. We have pledge a tenth of our revenue to toward improving education in Rural Nigeria. #communitydevelopment #branding #csr

Benefits of proposed 5% profit investment in enhancing business operations Transparency in CSR activities can significantly enhance a company’s reputation. Consumers and investors are increasingly looking for businesses that demonstrate a genuine commitment to social and environmental responsibility. By publicly reporting their community investments, companies can differentiate themselves from competitors and attract a loyal customer base that values ethical business practices. The proposed bill requiring large companies to invest up to 5% of their profits in community projects represents a significant step towards institutionalizing CSR in Nigeria. While businesses have expressed concerns about the financial implications of this mandate, it is essential to recognize the broader benefits of such investments. Many companies are already engaged in substantial CSR activities, and the bill simply formalizes these efforts, ensuring greater accountability and transparency. By embracing the proposed legislation, businesses can enhance their reputation, build stakeholder trust, and contribute to the development of a more stable and prosperous society. Effective CSR reporting can demonstrate a company’s commitment to sustainable development, attracting customers, investors, and employees who value ethical business practices. Moreover, community investments can yield significant economic benefits, creating a more favorable business environment and driving long-term profitability. To ensure the successful implementation of the bill, it is essential to encourage compliance and collaboration among businesses, government agencies, and other stakeholders. This can be achieved through incentives, capacity-building initiatives, and public-private partnerships. By working together, we can turn the tide on plastic pollution and pave the way towards a sustainable future. Through concerted effort and innovation, we can ensure that the proposed legislation leads to tangible benefits for communities and contributes to the long-term success of businesses in Nigeria. Egbema Chiefs Urge Chevron to Fulfill CSR Obligations In a critical push for justice and development, the Chiefs of Egbema Kingdom in Warri North Local Government Area, Delta State, have issued a firm directive to Chevron Nigeria Limited, demanding the immediate fulfillment of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitments to the Egbema offshore communities. This call follows growing frustrations over perceived neglect of the communities' pressing development needs. The directive, led by Chief Oyibo Sobo, was issued during a meeting on November 27, 2024, at Chevron's main office in Warri. Community representatives, spearheaded by Comrade Mike JK Tiemo, presented substantial evidence of Chevron’s lapses in fulfilling its CSR obligations. These included written documents highlighting the challenges faced by the communities despite their significant contributions to Nigeria’s oil wealth. The Egbema delegation, including figures such as Mr. Timi David, Mr. Morris Anuwo, Pastor Clifford Atijere, and Mr. Tony Oniyebrutan, emphasized the urgent need for Chevron to address critical issues affecting the communities. They pointed to infrastructure deficits, inadequate educational support, poor healthcare facilities, and environmental degradation as areas requiring immediate action. Chief Oyibo Sobo acknowledged the weight of the evidence presented by Comrade Tiemo and stressed the importance of Chevron acting swiftly to restore justice, peace, and stability in the region. The Chiefs warned that further delays could escalate tensions and harm the relationship between Chevron and its host communities. The meeting underscored the need for a collaborative approach to addressing these challenges, with the Chiefs emphasizing that Chevron's proactive engagement is essential for sustainable development and a peaceful operating environment. As the spotlight turns to Chevron’s response, the Chiefs have made it clear that the Egbema communities expect tangible action to resolve their concerns. Failure to act, they warned, could jeopardize the fragile peace in the region. This resolution represents a pivotal moment in the Egbema communities’ fight for equitable development and justice, highlighting their demand for Chevron to honor its longstanding CSR commitments.

DAY 1️⃣6️⃣ The closing chapter of talking about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals✨ PEACE JUSTICE & STRONG INSTITUTIONS SDG 16 entails •Harm prevention: Relying on instititutions that maintains law & order as well as citizens who have a duty not to cause you harm as you are entitled to Life (Theory of Rights & Duties). •Fair prosecution: Section 36 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution. •Information Verification & validation: Identifying false news. •Crisis response: Search and Rescue. PARTNERSHIP FOR THE GOALS For the past 2 weeks, I was privileged to access articles and podcasts of thriving social change makers in Nigeria and all 5 change makers always seem to mention and input how partnership is very important. I have been made to believe that partnership takes one from 0 to 100. It opens novel doors & ideas that you might never have gotten to experience if you are working alone. Mind you, working alone is not a bad idea and infact, it is advised you work alone when you are starting in order to learn more about yourself and evolve properly. After the evolving stage, collaborate collaborate & collaborate. It is not a coincidence Partnership is amongst the 17 SDGs. The United Nations input Partnership as SDG 17 so that Member-Countries could partner with each other to leverage on areas where they’re lacking in technological expertise or having no idea at all so as to reach whatever goal both Countries have in mind. In turn, a Government can partner with organizations that have brought themselves forward to achieving a particular SDG. Here you see that Government is doing the work but in an indirect manner through these organizations by FUNDING. Partnership gets the job done faster.
