In the heart of Washington, DC, a retail renaissance was quietly underway. The city’s retail scene had faced its share of challenges, but its bounce-back was nothing short of remarkable. With monthly retail sales growing at 7% year-over-year, DC outpaced the national average by 170 basis points, according to JLL’s DC Retail Outlook 2023. The streets of Georgetown buzzed with excitement as 59 new retail stores spread their doors in 2022, and there were whispers of 13 more on the horizon. The city’s spirit of resilience was evident as restaurants and bars took the lead, accounting for 71% of new openings in 2023. As the sun set over the capital, a new trend emerged: “competitive socializing.” Escape rooms, art installations, and mini golf embraced the city, adding a vibrant layer to the retail tapestry. Amidst this revival, DC’s retail story was one of growth, adaptability, and an unwavering spirit.
“We really rely on the location to carry us,” the owner of a high-profile Georgetown waterfront venue tells us. “When it comes to Washington, D.C., I’m really stumped as to what to do.” #dc #washingtondc #restaurants

Squatting of vacant properties has not hit the headlines for some time; that does not mean it hasn't been happening though - far from it. Clearly due to the high profile of celebrity chefs, publicity for the squatters' 'cause' has led to them being targeted. We are seeing a significant rise in vacant buildings being squatted, possibly due in part to the ongoing increased cost of living but also potentially as a result of heightened political activity, demonstrations and so on. Please get in contact if we can assist you in securing your vacant property and, in turn, prevent it from being unlawfully occupied by squatters. We have a wide range of security solutions available. In addition, we are well placed to assist in the repossession of buildings, should you have been misfortunate enough to have fallen victim to these groups. #squatting #security #hospitality
Squatters are targetting high profile hospitality venues at an alarming rate. Very soon after squatters targetted Gordon Ramsey's York and Albany in Camden, another group have targetted Marco Pierre-White's former Leicester Square restaurant. https://lnkd.in/egt5JJRE This shows a worrying pattern of behaviour, and is unlikely to halt soon. Luckily Belstone Management Services have a rich history of protecting vacant hospitality venues, and can help out at a pinch 🔐 07984 313945 joe@belstonemanagement.com #hospitality #propertymanagement #security #squatting #london

The good breweries are thriving. Is your brewery vibrant and relevant? Take a page out of Simon Malls playbook. Whether you’re a microbrewery, taproom, brewpub, restaurant or retailer … you can do this — it’s that simple. Now, you have a highly-important project to address this week and transfuse ‘fresh blood’ into something that has grown very stale. Love this article. One that's close to my heart, given most things that are planned for Crewe seem to go "sideways" mostly due to them being run by people with very little idea what the people of Crewe actually want, and have never lived there themselves. The new market at least is leading the way. Check out the full article and let me know what you think. WeGoAgain
Welcome to the heart of Crewe – where shopping, dining, working, and playing converge in a symphony of community spirit and vibrant energy. Crewe Market Hall has transcended its traditional roots to become more than just a market, it’s a a cool new place to be. Step inside and you’ll be surprised. Gone are the days of uninspired market halls – Crewe Market Hall is now a bustling, dynamic space that pulses with life and excitement. Since its grand reopening in 2021, the market has become a magnet for locals and visitors alike, drawing crowds with its diverse mix of independent businesses and lively atmosphere. Have you been to a wedding on Long Island? If so, it was probably at a Lessing's venue. How did one family build such a massive catering dynasty? It all started in 1890 when Maxwell Lessing opened New York's first lunch counter, serving sandwiches and cokes to young stockbrokers on Wall Street. Up until 1977 they hadn't sold a drop of liquor. Mrs. Lessing was very against it. But they had an opportunity that was too good to pass up... the only bar in Breezy Point was for sale, and it ended up being a goldmine. That's when things really took off. In 1978 they opened the Post Office Cafe in Babylon. This was the start of their Main Street restaurant plan, turning historic spots into cozy local favorites. What happened next was their biggest breakthrough yet. They transformed old mansions and estates into venues like Bourne Mansion, The Barn at Old Bethpage, and the Mansion at Oyster Bay. Every year they cater over 1000 weddings. Now their portfolio includes over 100 locations across the Northeast and Florida. On top of the wedding venues they have corporate dining centers, restaurants, and some virtual kitchens and blaze pizza franchises. What is the secret to their success? Family! Six generations later, it's still family owned and operated with 15 Lessings currently on the team. Anyone that wants in has to work two to three years outside the company, with younger Lessings going to places like Union Square Hospitality and coming back with fresh ideas to expand the dynasty. Unlike the Roys, they're able to keep family and business separate. Each member has to earn their stripes and start at the bottom. They gotta apply through the careers page just like everyone else. But regardless of which Lessing is running the show, adaptability is in their blood. They've survived COVID, World Wars, recessions, even The Great Depression, and show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. -- Share this with a friend who had a Lessing's wedding and follow me @joedirico if you like these types of origin stories. #foodbusiness #longislandbusiness #weddings
