New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) Commissioner Louis A. Molina announced a new expansion of the City’s successful Demand Response program to further reduce energy consumption, cut emissions, and protect the grid this summer. A total of 627 city facilities across 36 agencies and organizations will participate, committing to a load reduction of 122 MW, representing the most facilities that have committed in the past 10 years, and a 13% increase in participation over the last two years. City agencies have earned total program revenues in excess of $120 million since the program began in 2013. Over the past two years, 72 new facilities have joined, including Governor’s Island, Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, Brooklyn Botanical Garden, and several New York City Public Schools. It is estimated that, in total, energy consumption will drop by 122 MW during peak summer demand, mitigating the need for high-polluting power plants to increase output to meet the City’s energy demands. Energy efficiency measures, demand response, and virtual power plants (VPPs) can help manage energy demand and support grid reliability. While VPPs offer substantial potential to lower grid stress during periods of peak demand, several barriers prevent their widespread adoption, including lack of policy and/or regulatory clarity and reluctance among utilities. The Victorian government’s long-running energy efficiency rebate scheme will undergo a nearly $6 million strategic review to better focus its design on helping households and businesses in the state to electrify and get off gas. The review of the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program, was announced by the Labor Allan government on Tuesday as part of a $1.8 billion spend on energy in its cost-of-living focused 2024/25 state budget. “With electrification the best way to lower power prices for families, we’re delivering a $5.9 million investment for a strategic review of the Victorian Energy Upgrades program – ensuring it will be the key driver to help more Victorians electrify their homes and businesses, slashing power bills and reducing emissions,” the government said. #electrification #energyefficiency #policy #energysavings https://lnkd.in/gkrpgERj

The State of Maryland needed a way to manage and promote energy savings initiatives across a wide portfolio. The Office of Energy & Sustainability (OES), located within the Maryland Department of General Services used its database to discover that 20 state agencies and university campuses in Maryland were responsible for consuming more than 90% of the energy used in state government operations. OES then created a working group composed of these 20 state agencies and campuses to meet quarterly to discuss energy efficiency strategies and share presentations on energy savings technologies and practices. Maryland focused on increasing Administration buy-in and agency participation in energy efficiency efforts to support energy savings at these agencies. To date, the engagement of the working group helped the state reduce its energy use by over 11.2% in a five-year time period. Our Principal Energy & Projects Engineer, Matt Chadbourn, spoke to the Facilities Management Journal about the need for companies to prepare now for the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) deadlines this year. The first deadline for phase three of ESOS may have been extended to June 2024 but this time should be used wisely to meet significant new demands for businesses, including a much greater level of reporting detail. The new requirements, along with June and December deadlines, require organisations to focus on their energy auditing strategies now to avoid costly and time-consuming revisions later.
