This expansion by Collins Aerospace demonstrates that #manufacturing is alive and well. We hear lots of "stuff" in the news - and to be honest, news is made to sell us on what gets us excited. The truth is that manufacturing is healthy, alive and well. Wagstaff, Inc. appreciates its industry partners as we work to build a #workforce ready to meet our local demands. We appreciate our #education partners who help us prepare for these expansions that will bring thousands of new jobs. In a recent presentation at our annual retreat for the Spokane Workforce Council, we saw the data that showed about 1500 (ish...I'm misquoting) new jobs over the next few years in manufacturing. I can name 6 companies right now who are expanding like Collins that will bring in that many NEW jobs with their current projects. That does not take into account any new projects, the jobs we need to replace turnover from retirements, or the jobs we need to replace people that get taken out of the area. The bottom line? THERE IS A HEALTHY FUTURE IN MANUFACTURING. We need smart, tech-savvy workers with great skills. They have great-paying jobs with amazing opportunities. Our programs like the Production and Manufacturing Institute help create interest in the trades by bringing these opportunities and experiences to students. More of these expansions will come. We're looking forward to seeing more of this healthy growth in the months and years ahead!! Nichol Savko, P.E. Sean D. Hiring managers, this one hits close to home for me. After my last post on demographics and the coming talent shortages, I wanted to highlight another example because we've already seen it in accounting with Advance Auto Parts citing a lack of skilled accounting personnel for material weaknesses in their financial-reporting control. WSJ is reporting that Boeing is struggling to attract the right skilled talent to fill their machinist jobs. I drive past the Boeing facilities all the time in Everett and Renton. I’ll also be flying a Max this summer. Boeing’s workforce has been transformed since the pandemic after senior employees retired. Now, they’re on a hiring and training spree to replenish its ranks. This figured shocked me: "Of the more than 30,000 Boeing employees represented by District 751 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, roughly half have less than six years of experience, the union said. That is double the level before the pandemic." That means roughly in the past four years that Boeing has recruited approximately 7,500 machinists since 2024. What about the other businesses that Boeing is pulling from? Companies will be fighting for talent and the article mentions Boeing recruiting everyone from former cybersecurity experts to former Starbucks trainers. Not only will you be competing over a smaller pool of talent, but this smaller pool of talent will be incentivized financially and professionally (via training) to go to some of the large players in the space in their current or different roles. That’s going to make it challenging for the rest of us to recruit qualified people. Who’s going to be the Boeing example in your industry that’s going to be on a hiring spree for talent? To sum up the outlook for the rest of this decade. There will be less working age people available and this smaller pool of talent will create increased competition. I don’t think AI will save us yet. How are you going to make sure you get the right people in your roles? More to come!
