Join us in congratulating Friends University Junior Lennon Tillemans on being hired for a Cyber Security internship with Koch Industries this summer. Lennon is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security. Besides the effort invested in his career, he participates in other activities around campus: Chapel Worship Band and Concert Jazz Band. Way to go, Lennon! Tillemans learned in his job search that building relationships can be powerful: "The best way to get connected is to meet people face-to-face." " Don't be afraid to build relationships!" He found this opportunity at the Fall 2023 Business Career Fair hosted by the Career Services Department. When thinking about aspects that best prepared him for this opportunity, Lennon immediately highlighted Professor Mathew Magee: " His encouraging words helped me tremendously in my job search." The student also added that meeting in person with Koch Industries representatives made the difference. "Don't be afraid to put in the hard work and put yourself out there," is the message Lennon would like to send to students looking for a similar opportunity as his. Last but not least, Lennon expresses his gratitude for this opportunity: "I thank God for helping me get this opportunity and teaching me how to be the person He wants me to be. I can't forget Him because He's why I got this opportunity." Do you know a fellow Falcon with a recent job or internship offer? Nominate them for a future student spotlight by sending us a DM! #myfriendsu

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗜 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿 👇 Career fairs are packed with Computer Science students, all aiming for Software Engineering roles. So, how do you stand out? One way is to figure out your niche by asking yourself: “Software Engineer, but in what industry?” For some, it might be healthcare, cybersecurity, or something entirely unique. As a double major in Computer Science and Graphic Design, I’ve always been passionate about blending technology with creativity. That’s why I created an Augmented Reality (AR) business card and brought it to the career fair. When you scan the QR code, a 3D character of me pops up with a quick video showcasing my projects. It’s even interactive—you can click the icons to connect with me on LinkedIn. The response? So many recruiters were impressed and said they’d never seen anything like it. It turned out to be an awesome conversation starter. Thank you Sabiha Khan and Anthony Mejia for featuring in my video - your reaction means a lot to me! 😊 If you’re curious about AR or Mixed Reality, check out XR Wiki—it’s a great resource to learn more! #SHPE24 #SWE24 #ConferenceTips #CareerFair #businesscard #AugmentedReality #internship

🚀 Attending the Mount St. Mary's University Career Fair Experience.🚀 Today, I had the opportunity to connect with numerous professionals and organizations that align with my passion for cybersecurity and IT. It was an invaluable chance to network, learn more about the industry, and present my skills and projects. 🔑 Key Takeaways: Preparation is Everything! 📝 I spent time polishing my resume and practicing my elevator pitch, which made me feel confident and prepared for every conversation. Be Curious and Engaged! 🤝 I asked insightful questions and showed genuine interest in the companies I spoke with. This approach opened up deeper conversations and valuable insights. Follow Up! 📧 I’m already connecting on LinkedIn and sending follow-up emails to the amazing professionals I met. Building these relationships is crucial. To my fellow students, I highly recommend taking advantage of these opportunities. It’s not just about landing a job or internship; it's about learning, growing, and expanding your professional network. While the experience was incredible, I do wish there were more cybersecurity and IT companies represented. It would be amazing to see more opportunities in those fields at future events! #CareerFair #Networking #CyberSecurity #MountStMarys #CareerGrowth

Confidence is key when approaching potential employers at Tennessee Tech’s Engineering Career Fair on Feb. 8. That’s how Landon Crabtree, a junior computer science major from Manchester, snagged an internship as a security engineer with Microsoft, where he spent the summer in Redmond, Wash., implementing security protocols and mutual authentication between internal Azure services. First, he emphasized being prepared – as in knowing what you want to highlight about yourself and how your skills and experience can be transferred to the internship or co-op role you want. Second, it’s important to believe in yourself. “You need to go there and think, ‘I’m the best candidate for this position: I have all these skills, I’m perfect for this role,’ and sell yourself to these employers," he said. "If you apply those two things, that’s going to display confidence and help you stand out.” Students: Need more tips and resources? 🚀 Exciting times ahead! 🚀 As I gear up for the upcoming career fair, I'm eager to explore summer internship opportunities. This semester, I'm diving deep into two research-heavy courses: Essentials of Technology Management and Information Security Standards, Risk Management, and Compliance, along with a fascinating 8-week elective: US History II. Recently, I had the privilege of attending a women’s retreat at TBar M with my Church, The Well Austin. Immersing myself in the Book of Proverbs provided me with insights that resonate deeply with my current journey: 📖 Proverbs 3:21: "My son, do not lose sight of these; keep sound wisdom and discretion." 📖 Proverbs 3:7: "Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil." 📖 Proverbs 16:9: "The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps." These verses remind me to trust in the Lord’s plan over my own, an important lesson as I navigate my academic and professional path. They are teaching me patience and surrender. I'm excited to connect with fellow professionals and learners at the career fair. If anyone has tips or would like to share experiences about summer internships, please drop a comment! 💬 #CareerFair #Internships #StudentLife #FaithJourney #Proverbs #WomenInTech #TechManagement #RiskManagement #Networking

Attended the CS Career Fair yesterday and was able to talk to some awesome recruiters. I'd like to take the time to thank Georges Beyrouti for taking a look at my resume and referring me to Jesse Wolgamott, MBA for frontend at EOG. As a junior majoring in Computer Science, I'm not entirely too sure if my position as a student will permit a full-time position but I will continue to be on the lookout for internships and do my research in EOG! I appreciate your time in coming to our career fair and allowing me to grab a Rubix cube from your table as I missed the opportunity last semester to do so at the NSM + CS Career Fair. I had my eyes particularly set on LZ Technology, Inc. because of my great interest in Aerospace and Robotics. But it was just my luck that I had one particularly rough Database class last semester that dropped my GPA down 1 decimal below their required to apply. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't slacking off on applying to internships this semester, but this serves as a reminder that I need to step it up in everything I'm working on and not lose sight of my goals. I've been taking on a bunch of projects and extracurriculars this spring and even assumed the position of Student Director at UH's NSM Career Center. It's been difficult to assimilate to those added responsibilities on top of schoolwork, however, there is no doubt that I'm making progress. I definitely still need to do better in my classes but I won't be discouraged. Especially in this field, I fully understand now how internships are highly important but there was this one conversation I had with a classmate where she told me that inevitably and eventually we will have jobs regardless. Oftentimes, I tend to worry about the prospects of my career path and the future, though I feel that by holding onto that sentiment alone, I can have a more positive approach to figuring this stuff out and being kinder to myself. To anyone who's still applying to internships and/or job hunting, I hope you too are successful in your endeavors!

Hi, Network! Last week, on October 29th, I had the opportunity to attend the Career Tech Fair at City St George as part of my Professional Development module. The experience was invaluable, giving me a chance to connect with several organizations and learn further about changes in the tech industry. From advancements in AI and cybersecurity to the ever-evolving demand for new skills, it's clear the tech landscape is expanding and adapting at an incredible pace. One of my biggest takeaways was the importance of resilience in today’s competitive job market. Many describe the industry as oversaturated, but in reality, it’s full of opportunities for those who are persistent and willing to adapt. I was reminded of an old adage that rings especially true for anyone seeking placements or internships: ‘You already have the no, but the yes you can conquer.’ Rejection is part of the journey, but each one brings us closer to the right opportunity. This post is a reminder to everyone whether you’re in tech or some other industry to not give up! We’re all in this together, navigating similar challenges. With determination, a proactive mindset, and support from one another, there’s no limit to what we can accomplish. Remember, a little effort can go a long way toward reaching your goals. Let's keep pushing forward!
