I’m honored to take on the role of Vice Chair for SE 2050, working alongside co-chairs Lauren Wingo and Luke Lombardi, the program's new secretary Erin Winston, and the incredible engineers on the SE 2050 committee. The SE 2050 Commitment Program, with the support of SEI - Structural Engineering Institute, works to reduce embodied carbon in our built environment. I’m excited to contribute to this important initiative, which has gained support from 150+ structural engineering firms across the country. To keep this momentum going, we’re dedicated to providing valuable guidance and insights that will earn your commitment to reducing #embodiedcarbon. I'll use this as an opportunity to share some of what SE 2050 has cooking :) A big shout out to our newly launched Firm Recognition Program (thanks Annabel Shephard, PE & Luke Bastian) which will shine a spotlight on companies making significant strides in sustainability & foster a culture of innovation and commitment to reducing embodied carbon. Our database/data science team led by Zachary Chabot, P.E. seeks to improve the experience for our users and maximizing our data analysis capabilities. By evaluating submitted embodied carbon assessments, we can gain valuable insights to inform better decision-making. If you're reading this, consider signing on & contributing EC data! The breadth and depth of our website's resource page is a huge achievement. Thank you to the leadership and expertise of Mark Webster and Jessica Martinez, PE for curating what the program can offer engineers seeking to reduce embodied carbon. None of this gets done without effective communication, which gets accomplished through consistently great work led by Chris Jeseritz. SE 2050 thrives on collaboration; we engage with various organizations and disciplines within the AEC industry. Our partnerships with groups like #AIA2030, Carbon Leadership Forum, and #IStructE have not only guided our efforts but also elevated the impact of the program. And if you thought I would get through this post without shouting out the incredible leadership of Michael Gryniuk & Frances Yang as well as Dirk Kestner, you would be wrong! After a few years of trying, we finally found a way to make this happen! Excited to visit University of New Brunswick and Brandon Searle for this event and discuss the future of #industrializedconstruction in Canada 🍁 🇨🇦 and elsewhere. The first thing I will share is that the principles for #industrializedconstruction are universal and therefore can be taught and understood across contexts. It is up to us to translate our knowledge into different situations. That is the journey I am fortunate enough to be on - taking the principles learned at Luleå University of Technology and applying them at Lindbäcks Bygg and then Volumetric Building Companies. The most common reaction is “we can’t do that” often meaning “we have never done that before”. What happens next is the difference between status quo and progress. Changing a system is hard work, bit by bit. Let’s talk about that - what are the bits and how do we work to change our construction methods to give more people a place to live?
