Recently, a few of our Biogro team members visted a local supermarket in hunt of greenwashing- products that make or exaggerate environmental claims without the backing of certification👎 We found that several products were claiming to have organic ingredients, be organic, or were even placed in the organic section without being certified! Organic certification is the best way to make sure that the products you're purchasing are what they truly say they are. Be sure to look for a trusted certification logo when purchasing organic💚 Consumer NZ is currently looking for examples of greenwashing, which you can send to them at the link below. 🔗https://lnkd.in/gKvbBmtX #biogro #organic #newzealand #nzbusiness #greenwashing #environment #certified #sustainable

The latest Greener by Default blog post from Desman Wilson, with infographics from Olivia W. Zheng, delves deeper into food waste. Turns out that not all food waste is created equal when it comes to the environmental impacts: 🍌Fruits & veggies contribute more food waste by volume, but... 🥩 Animal products contribute more food waste emissions because meat emits over 3x more methane than plant matter when it rots 🌽 Animal products also have a greater footprint from upstream emissions because when meat gets thrown away, it includes not just all of the energy that went into transport, slaughter, and processing of that animal, but also all of the corn/soy and fertilizer grown to feed that animal. It takes 5 LB of feed for every 1 LB of chicken. 🐤 5% of broiler chickens - over 500 MILLION per year - die before they ever reach slaughter, which means their lives, bodies, and feed input all go to waste. 🌱 Luckily, there's an easy solution - eat and serve more plant-based foods! Less meat on menus means less meat wasted. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/g6sFYSPG

Last week, The Farmlink Project team joined the 2024 ReFED Summit in Baltimore and attended US Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack's announcement releasing the White House National Strategy for Reducing Food Loss and Waste and Recycling Organics! This interagency strategy formed by USDA, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), FDA, and The White House is a landmark commitment calling for unprecedented collaboration between agencies, companies, organizations, and individuals to achieve the federal goal of reducing food loss and waste by 50% by 2030. Farmlink celebrates the final strategy’s incorporation of our comments urging the agencies to involve food rescue organizations as research and implementation partners. We are especially excited to recognize the strategy’s call for partnerships between the private and public sectors and food recovery non-profits. This inclusion is a critical first step to creating effective solutions to reduce food waste and related carbon emissions. We are also encouraged to note that many actions in the strategy are guided by the EPA Wasted Food Scale. At Farmlink, we believe in the co-beneficial opportunity of recovering food waste to support farmers, feed families, and heal the planet. The guidance of the Wasted Food Scale in highlighting the importance of food recovery and the vital organizations that recover millions of pounds of food every year promises to unlock synergistic, equitable, and sustainable solutions to achieve FLW reduction goals at both a national and global scale. Stay tuned for more updates on the most exciting announcements in the strategy and what they mean for our work!
