What's the actual value of minerals and metals in our daily lives? By 2050, the global population is set to surge by nearly 25%, driving an unprecedented demand for minerals and metals. However, meeting this demand while adhering to low-carbon and low-impact standards presents a challenge. Can the mining industry's traditional 'extract and transact' model adapt to support the low-carbon future society expects? This is a fascinating look at the short-to-mid term outlook on some of the most critical minerals we need and use in today's world. Seeing where primary mining and refining occurs, as well as demand outlook paints a unique (and somewhat grim) picture. Adding in supply, geopolitical, and ESG/climate risk, shows us just how volatile the future could be for the building blocks of our technological age. I'm a big believer that necessity drives innovation - and now is a perfect time to find alternatives to these critical minerals. Because relying on a consistent supply 10, 20, or 30 years into the future is highly unlikely. #urbanmining #thefutureisnow #recycling https://lnkd.in/gHRvha5V

Yesterday, the World Economic Forum in collaboration with McKinsey & Company released this report which describes in detail the barriers and solutions to investment and innovation needed to unlock increased production of critical minerals. "McKinsey analysis indicates that investments of $300-400 billion in mining, refining and smelting would be needed per year through 2030 to meet growing demand" for the energy transition. While policy makers have been working to increase production and processing of critical minerals, it's clear more action, more quickly is needed if we want to meet this challenge. #criticalminerals
