International Day for Tolerance - #HumanRights #Tolerance #UNESCO #UN "Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human." UNESCO's 1995 Declaration of Principles on Tolerance. International Day of Tolerance on November 16 is a great opportunity for you to think back and recall the last time you had a different perspective than one of your friends? When’s the last time you’ve had to learn something about someone else’s culture? We’re betting it wasn’t that long ago. Look and learn the date that celebrates open-mindedness and listening. It was started by the UN General Assembly, with the goal of getting educational institutions and the general public to see tolerance as a staple of society. And it came after the United Nations declared a Year for Tolerance in 1995. In 1995, UNESCO created the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance as a way to define and provide awareness of tolerance for any and all governing and participating bodies. That day in 1995 was November 16. Now, as an anniversary of that Declaration, we celebrate the International Day for Tolerance every November 16 to help spread tolerance and raise awareness of any intolerance that may still be prevalent in the world today. Although we should be tolerant every day, it’s always good to have one occasion to remind us just how important tolerance is. Additionally, UNESCO created an award to recognize those with great achievements in promoting the spirit of tolerance or non-violence in fields such as science, culture, and the arts. The UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize and the UNESCO International Day for Tolerance both recognize that tolerance is a universal human right.

Held every year on 21 May, UNESCO leads the celebration of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development highlighting not only the richness of the world’s cultures, but also the essential role of intercultural dialogue for achieving peace and sustainable development. With 89% of all current conflicts in the world occurring in countries with low intercultural dialogue, to forge effective cooperation and sustain peace, strengthening intercultural dialogue must be a priority. Three-quarters of the world’s major conflicts have a cultural dimension. Bridging the gap between cultures is urgent and necessary for peace, stability and development. Cultural diversity is a driving force of development, not only with respect to economic growth, but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual life. This is captured in the culture conventions, which provide a solid basis for the promotion of cultural diversity. Cultural diversity is thus an asset that is indispensable for poverty reduction and the achievement of sustainable development. At the same time, acceptance and recognition of cultural diversity – in particular through innovative use of media and Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) – are conducive to dialogue among civilizations and cultures, respect and mutual understanding. We must keep campaigning for cultural diversity and raising awareness. #CulturalDiversity #InterculturalDialogue #UNESCO #PeaceAndDevelopment #SustainableDevelopment #DialogueForPeace #CulturalAwareness

Tomorrow is #InternationalDayOfTolerance. This UNESCO declaration was adopted on 16 November 1995. Tolerance is neither indulgence nor indifference. It is respect and appreciation for the rich variety of our world’s cultures, forms of expression and ways of being human. A declaration that has just as much importance in today’s world as it did in 1995. https://lnkd.in/eSNyZ8XZ

Today is World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, started by UNESCO in 2001. The UN states that over 75% of all major conflicts have a cultural dimension. That’s why, even on just a small scale, it’s vitally important for us to each play our part in deepening our understanding of other cultures. If we can make cultural diversity the norm, not only can we make our lives more fulfilling on an intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual level, but we also contribute towards peace, stability and development across the world. Today, we celebrate World Indigenous Day, a time to honor the rich cultures, wisdom, and resilience of Indigenous peoples across the globe. This day reminds us of the invaluable contributions Indigenous communities have made to our world, from their deep connection to nature and sustainable living practices to their diverse languages, arts, and traditions. There are several diverse indigenous groups that have faced significant challenges but have continued to preserve their language and cultural heritage and share their traditions. For example, Australia’s Indigenous peoples are two distinct cultural groups made up of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, which are further divided into hundreds of groups, such as the Arrernte in central Australia and Bininj in Western Arnhem Land. Each group has its own unique language, history, cultural traditions, customs, and laws. These few examples don’t even begin to cover the abundance of indigenous groups all over the world, each with their own unique story to tell. #WorldIndigenousDay #IndigenousPeoplesDay #CulturalHeritage #StandWithIndigenousPeoples

August 9, 2024, marks the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. "On this day, let us remember that Indigenous peoples are actors of change, guardians of natural resources, and carriers of unique worldviews, knowledge, and skills. 🌳 Understanding the Cultural Tree in Indigenous Cultures 🌳 The Cultural Tree is a powerful metaphor used to illustrate the different levels of culture within a society. Just like a tree, culture has visible and hidden parts that shape our identities and interactions. This concept is particularly meaningful when exploring Indigenous cultures, such as those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. Surface Culture (The Leaves): This level includes the observable aspects of culture such as traditional ceremonies, art, music, and dance. In Indigenous cultures, these elements are vibrant and deeply intertwined with their heritage and connection to the land. Shallow Culture (The Trunk) and Deep Culture (The Roots) exists also and are central to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity and worldviews. By understanding the Cultural Tree, we can appreciate the complexity and depth of Indigenous cultures, fostering greater empathy and connection in our diverse world. The culture tree is addressed in our workshop, Elevate your Leadership: Indigenous Ways. The next one is available December 4.
