In 2024, citizens from over 70 countries are called to the polls. In unclear times of political polarisation, violence, and multiple crises, elections from India to the US, going through Mexico and the European Parliament, are shaping the politics of tomorrow. Amidst all the questions that might come with this, in our cS Internal Dialogue we raised this one: What about culture? 🤨 Last week culture Solutions hosted an enriching and insightful debate among cS members on how the current political trends are impacting culture and will do so in the future, and questioned whether they can compromise the potential of culture for promoting dialogue, understanding and democracy. 💬 Curious to know what were the main conclusions? Stay tuned! #InternationalCulturalRelations #CulturalRelations #CulturalDiversity #CulturalDiplomacy #Culture

In today’s interconnected world, the decisions made thousands of miles away impact us all. Whether through shifts in policy, economic changes, or cultural influence, what happens globally doesn’t stay confined within borders. The U.S. elections are a perfect example of this global ripple effect. With Election Day around the corner, we’re reminded of how one nation’s choice can shape the lives of citizens around the globe. I find myself following every part of the campaign – speeches, debates, even celebrity endorsements. It’s almost like a TV show, yet the stakes couldn’t be higher. This complexity fascinates me – it’s not just a narrative but real life, affecting policy, economic stability, and the direction of international relations. The results next Tuesday matter to us all. As we tune in to watch how this story unfolds, let’s remember: we’re not just spectators but global citizens, connected in ways we often overlook. #GlobalGovernance #Geopolitics #USelections2024 #InterconnectedWorld EdBisory Services

According to Francis Fukuyama, 2024 has so far been good for democracy Francis Fukuyama famously declared the “end of history”, predicting the triumph of liberal democracy. As such, we have to be aware of his optimism :-). In his latest article published in Foreign Affairs Magazine, he highlights how nearly 30 countries will hold defining elections this year, proving that populism and authoritarianism are not unstoppable forces. As we navigate the global political landscape in 2024, democracy has faced major tests—but the results have been surprisingly resilient 🌍. While fears of authoritarian populism rising in countries like Hungary, India, and even the U.S. are real, this year has shown (according to Fukuyama)) that democratic norms and institutions still have the power to prevail. 📊 However, the biggest test will come in America as we head toward the November 2024 election. The stakes are higher than ever as democracy itself may hinge on the outcome. Fukuyama calls on citizens to be mobilized and engaged, which can make a difference. Democracy may be fragile, but it remains powerful when people show up. “It is possible for democracy to evolve, to come up with novel policies simply by asking the people ‘What should we do together?’ – Audrey Tang. On the day that Ireland goes to the polls in the European and local elections, the story of Audrey Tang is a timely one. Starting out as an activist in Taiwan’s Sunflower democracy movement - which itself sparked a process of political transformation -, Audrey is currently the country’s Minister for Digital Affairs. She is also the first transgender and non-binary person to hold a position in the country’s cabinet. Her goal in government is inspiring: “My existence is not to become a minister for a certain group, nor to broadcast government propaganda. Instead, it is to become a 'channel' to allow greater combinations of intelligence and strength to come together.” Taiwan itself has also become a successful example of how technology can be used to support transparent and participatory democracy, as seen in its handling of the pandemic and its capacity to safeguard elections by effectively responding to misinformation. The documentary “Good Enough Ancestor” (trailer in the article below) details Audrey’s life and mission – as she says, “We can become co-creators of our democratic systems, reconfiguring society in a way that is more transparent, more inclusive, more fair.” Audrey also has a new book: “Pluralilty: The Future of Collaborative Technology and Democracy” which is available here: https://lnkd.in/eKcD6sWf https://lnkd.in/eY36VAVZ #democracy #EUelections #useyourvote #elections #activism #transparentgovernment #government

Excited to share our new article in Journal of Democracy! "SOUTHEAST ASIA'S TOXIC ALLIANCES" by Prof Duncan McCargo and myself is now published. We explore how 'toxic unity' rhetoric masks elite deals that subvert democracy without overt repression. Our research identifies seven key features of these alliances: - Improbable bedfellows (e.g., Prabowo/Jokowi, Zahid/Anwar) - Reputational whitewashing - Clandestine deals (pardons, dropped cases) - Hidden brokerage by behind-the-scenes actors - Exclusionary agendas - Discursive appeals - Voter alienation These Faustian pacts demand critical scrutiny. They turn elections into tools for undermining democratic processes and boost influence of extraconstitutional powers. Comments and discussion welcome! #SoutheastAsia #Democracy #PoliticalScience https://lnkd.in/eV7jY7nN

From the resilience provided by global trade to the irony of enjoying multinational fast food chains like McDonald's, we highlight the complexities of today's world.
