#NewArticle Museographic narrating of dissonant heritage in Tianjin’s former international concessions Maria Gravari-Barbas, Sandra Guinand, Yue Lu & Chensi Shen Concessions—defined as the urban elements built by Western powers while ‘occupying’ various parts of the Chinese territory—have recently been granted heritage status by the Chinese national and local authorities. However, in many respects, they are ‘dissonant’ heritage sites since they are the result of the several-decade-long ‘colonial’ presence in Tianjin of nine foreign powers. The aim of this study is to understand how former international concessions are featured in museums and interpretation centres in present-day Tianjin. https://lnkd.in/e6mdmK5M

Question for the #museum & #heritage hiveminds: can you recommend any audience research into the motivations & reactions of visitors to historic houses? There was an excellent study by Cadw (Barriers to visiting heritage sites 2022) and the equally excellent paper by Aileen Peirce ( “It Feels Like You Have Stepped Back in Time” 2020) but other than that I can find next to nothing. #museums #audienceengagement #visitorengagement #visitorexperience #audienceresearch

How should we deal with non-European artefacts in European museums? What does an appropriate restitution practice look like? The next webinar of #Mission21 is coming up! https://lnkd.in/eUeT77dc
In the next #webinar #Mission-#Colonialism Revisited” provenance researcher Isabella Bozsa and Cultural Studies scholar @Kokou Azamede will be discussing the “#Colonial Looting of Cultural Artefacts" and the role of missionary societies in collecting cultural artefacts from colonial contexts. Swiss museums house countless objects, plants, animals and human remains acquired under dubious circumstances during the colonial era. Should non-European cultural artefacts remain in Western museums today? What does an appropriate restitution practice look like? And how should the legacy of missionary collections be treated?
