Prioritise Sun Protection this summer holiday Sun, fun and sunburn (urgh!). Our harsh African sun can be extremely harmful. Here are a few helpful tips to help you avoid the "burn" this summer: • Cover up: Wear clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect as much skin as possible. • Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block at least 99% of UV light. • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher: Reapply at least every 2 hours, as well as after swimming or sweating. • “Water resistant” does not mean “waterproof.” No sunscreens are waterproof or “sweatproof,” and manufacturers are not allowed to claim that they are. If a product’s front label makes claims of being water resistant, it must specify whether it lasts for 40 minutes or 80 minutes while swimming or sweating. For best results, reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours and even more often if you are swimming or sweating. Sunscreen usually rubs off when you towel yourself dry, so you will need to put more on. • Seek shade: Limit your direct exposure to the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest. Is the summer heat getting you down? Here are some essential tips to have an enjoyable summer🌞😎 #1 Apply a generous amount of SPF 30 or higher sunscreen 15 minutes before heading outdoors, and reapply every two hours, especially after sweating or swimming. #2 Drink plenty of water throughout the day and try to avoid sugary drinks and alcohol as they can dehydrate you. #3 The sun is at its peak between 10 am and 4 pm, so find some shade like a hat and sunglasses to protect your head and eyes. #4 Ditch the dark colours and heavy fabrics. Opt for loose-fitting, lightweight, light-coloured clothing made from breathable materials like cotton. #5 Schedule outdoor activities for the cooler times of the day. Take breaks in air-conditioned spaces when needed. If you're planning a picnic, pack a cooler filled with water to keep you refreshed. Be aware of the signs of heatstroke, which include excessive sweating, dizziness, nausea and headache. If you experience these symptoms, move to a cool place immediately, remove excess clothing and drink fluids. Seek medical attention if your condition worsens. ☀️ WINDOW SEAT GLOW UP? DON’T FORGET THE SPF SHOW UP! ☀️ For many, scoring a window seat on an airplane is a win-win! Great views, a headrest, and no cart bumps. But there’s a hidden downside: sun exposure. While travelers are warned about sunburn risks during beach vacations and even ski getaways, taking protective skincare measures at 30,000 feet is not something typically discussed. Yet you could have a greater risk for sun damage while flying than when you’re on the ground. Apply sunscreen before takeoff, and consider reapplying on long flights if the window shade’s open. Don’t forget SPF lip balm! By taking these simple precautions, you can enjoy the scenic views from your window seat with peace of mind, knowing you’re protected from the sun’s harmful rays. ✈️ Have a safe flight! #TravelTips #SunSafety #WindowSeat #UpgradeYourFlight
